New Year - what do you do?

Like you janeyo we became real home birds while the children were growing up. Now they're all off doing their own thing we've gone back to partying into the wee hours! Most years we attend a murder mystery dinner with SIL/BIL. Everyone makes a huge effort with the costumes, but no one ever remembers who was the murderer by the end of the night!

We stay in with an evening of port and cheese, then champagne for the midnight bit - then bed. Partying not my thing at the moment, it used to be, maybe it will return when I am in my '60s

I don't like New Year's eve, had a very unhappy family tragedy one year so it is a difficult time especially as there is a huge emphasis on having a celebration all around you.
What we do is snuggle up together at home, we get in some lovely food, a few drinks and watch a new film/dvd on the tele or play computer games or on the Wii.
We do tend to stay up so we can be around for each other.
It isn't miserable just very quiet and supportive.

That sounds lovely Miffy, it must be difficult for lots of families like yours around Christmas with bad memories & lost loved ones.
We don't tend to do anything special anymore, when I was little we used to have drinks & 'first footing' etc. , then when I was in my teens & twenties we used to go out to celebrate but nowadays we just stay in , have a glass of wine & go to bed before midnight if there's nothing on T.V. (enjoyed Take That live on T.V. a couple of years ago!) & try to sleep through the fireworks!

Been there, done that and got the T-shirt first footing friends/family bringing the required lump of coal, Black Bun, and a wee dram. Hogmanay parties that take you days to recover (not from alcohol, just tiredness). By 11.45pm will be tucked up in bed with Mr Frosty

Sorry I cannot watch a minute of the Hogmanay programmes - they make me cringe. On New Years Day we will see friends and have Steak Pie for dinner. We still have the Black Bun and shortie, we just cut out the exhaustion that used to go with it. What ever way people see in the Bells, have a very Happy New Year.

I can remember many a fabulous New Year party - well the first couple of hours of 'em anyway!

Our local Pubs would have fancy dress parties, and we'd all make the effort - it was sooooo much fun. Some of us were quite creative, so it got really competitive, as we all tried to win. Oh yeah, there was loads of snoggin' too!

Now, though, most of the pubs are closed, the 'Gang' have dispersed to the four corners of the earth, and no-one seems to bother any more. We're really not party animals, so we usually stay in, and have a bevvy at home.

Our one remaining Pub is holding a Hog Roast this year, so we may wander down, depending on the weather! Sad b*ggers!

Well, what we normally do is:
- book some very expensive tickets to our normal pub for a dress-up do
- spend 3 hours getting ready
- have a row
- stay in

!

this year we're not planning anything: it's stupid to, because we aren't near anything, taxis are �25 each way, and I personally hate forced, organised jollity (I'd much rather it was spontaneous and sincere

)

My OH has a real aversion to New Year - his Mum died new years day a few years ago. He is working both days til midnight. Consequently I dont do anything, except take all the deccies down and generally feel its a waste of time.

This year we are going to harrogate for a black tie dinner will meet s and bil they are coming up from Essex will go to Betty's tea room for lunch then back to the hotel to get ready for the evening looking forward to it

I usually try to keep awake because at midnight i get a tremendous fire work display .
The reason i live on top of a big hill overlooking the grand metropolis of Birmingham and the west Midlands and it is a awesome sight when they all seem to go of together .
Millennium night was a good example the whole skyline seemed to erupt at once..

We've spent the last two years at friends houses...this year we get to return the favour.
Their children are the same ages as our two,so it could be the recipe for great.......or not!

The last two years have been good and all the kiddies have managed to stay awake and pretty well behaved,so hoping it will be the same this year.

I haven't gone to a pub in 5 years for New Year's Eve. Think it's generally a waste of time as it's overpriced and full of drunks.

We normally go round to a friend's house and just chill out. Last year it was 00:15 before we realised. Oopsie.

This year we've been invited to a house party. The people are quite civilised, though, so not too afraid, lol!
