  • New Job?

I've been offered a new job!!!!! Not only that but it's in a field that I've been wanting to get into for ages, but which I'm not really trained for (conservation/ecology). Is it the wrong time to be thinking of something like this? Also my OH works in the environmental area - has done for years - and he says he wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, largely because the job I've been offered is with a charity and he thinks charities may be the first to suffer because of the current economic problems. My thoughts are that even if it only lasted short-term at least I'd have references for that type of work in the future. The money is worse than I'm on at the moment, but that doesn't matter as the hours are more and so I'd actually be better off. I'm desperate to take it because of the experience I could gain from it, in fact I'm 99% certain that I will. Am I being really stupid?

That's what they are there for.

I know that there are issues around charities and funds being cut...but in this climate is ANY job safe? Have you got funds to pay the bills if the worst should happen.

I took a job just for the experience, with an aim of staying there a year max - and it was indeed a steep and stressful learning curve but I learnt more about business/large plc/funding/politics than I'd ever have learnt in the old job or in 10 years of business school. I left after 13 months with a portfolio of experience and didn't regret it in the end. But, we had bought a house that we could afford if only one of us was working, as a safety net.

you want to do it, you hoped to do it, it will give you experience in a field you want to work in?

i understand your OH's hesitance but.......... this recession is not going to last for ever even though it may seems so at the moment, how long before a similar chance comes up again? if ever?

i can't tell you either way, but i know what i would do

Well, I also work for an environmental charity. I would say if you've been offered a job you want, then go for it - there are fewer jobs around these days and more people after them, so to be offered this job means you are a cut above the rest. Take it, because if you don't get yourself on that ladder then someone else will step up ahead of you!!

Thanks everyone, I just phoned them to accept!!!!!!! I don't start until late Feb/early March so there will be plenty of time to get OH used to the idea.

Glad you grasped the opportunity. You'd only regret it if you hadn't.
