    My hoover has packed up !!

    It actually packed up 10 days ago and we have been on holiday for 7. So I have got away with the housework for a little while but now need to find a replacement.

    I want a good powerful cylinder with long hose and power cable.

    Can anyone suggest a good one (realistic price, not dyson) - there seems to be zillions to choose from and its all a bit bewildering!

    i know you said not a dyson but i have seen loads of them for sale on markets,carboots etc very cheap. i bought one just for spare parts to fix mine and it worked out a lot cheaper

      I've got a Henry Hoover. Got mine second hand so not sure about new price. It has massive capacity and will suck almost anything up. Electric flex so long I can plug it in at bottom landing and take it all the way to the top of a 3 storey house.

        The best hoover my wife has bought in a long time is a phillips 2000w from Bid tv, retail price £240, bid at £44.

          I would not be without my dyson, it's great for pet hair and I am now on the second one bought second hand (reconditioned) with the old one as spares.
          We bought another brand and I hated it it was soooo noisy and rubbish compared to the dyson. Think it was a white electrolux one. It is now the garage hoover lol

            Have a look at ebay,we got our dyson of it,paid sixty odd quid for it.

              I have a Henry and it is a fab little hoover, powerful, very, very long flex and hose, lots of tools with it, easy to carry up stairs. At the moment they are on offer at Homebase for £85 squid and if you don't fancy Henry in red you can have an Henrietta in baby pink!!

                I got a Henry about 10 years ago bril....would suck the skin off your arm. Made for use in indstry and is bullet proof.

                  It seems that the Henry range is popular, reviews online are very good too, We had already had this one as a possibility but wondered if any other makes would be suggested as reliable with good suction and features etc.

                    Have found a small independent shop that we can hopefully try a few models out for ease of use and power of suction etc. Will try the Henry range and compare to a Dyson, any other suggestions welcome.

                      I have a Henry and a Dyson. I had the Henry for a few years and was happy with it but the dog hairs stuck in the carpet were getting me down. I bought a Dyson at the beginning of the year and it is has been fantastic. We bought it on special offer from John Lewis (plus we had JL vouchers), we registered the vac online at the Dyson site and we have a 5 year guarantee. This will be our third Dyson.

                      Ok, I know it's strange thing to take a pic of but this is what I picked up after the first time I used the Dyson - I'd already used the Henry earlier that day.

                        Hi, If it helps you at all I repair vacuums 3 days a week we supply county schools etc., you need first to decide if you would be better to have an upright vac or a tub vac.
                        If you want an all round 'pick anything up tub vac' then go for a Henry (with windup cable) or a James, cheaper but without windup,both have nice easy chuck away dustbags (have you ever tried emptying a Dyson on a windy day?).
                        If on the other hand you think an upright vac is for you track down a SEBO not the cheapest but the best vac by far you can buy you should be able to pass it on the your grandchildren !!
                        The only time you run out of chances is when you stop taking them
