  • Mum knows best!

Did anyone watch the new Hairy Bikers foodie programme last night?

Some lovely stuff came forth from it - cheesey pie, rumpy pumpy soup and the samosas looked toppo

The cake lady was inspirational, I have to confess to (hardly ever) never baking even though Snowdrop adores anything sweet - but I have just found myself, in the kitchen, baking an apple sponge

I have to confess that as a Scot (and maybe because I'm not a mum?) I felt slightly embarrassed and switched over before it even got to the baking lady. I mean, beany mince??? Coronary cheese pie? Deep fried samosas? The rumpy pumpy soup looked lovely and in Scotland we have a long tradition of broths, but that recipe wasn't even covered - just the fact that this family obviously enjoyed the windy effects

I honestly thought the rest of the UK would be laughing at us. Just me???

Just you Caro! I loved the cheesy pie recipe - we used to have it at school. I'm a baking lady myself - village cake club tomorrow, assuming enough of the oldies can get out. I don't think it was meant to be traditional regional dishes - they covered that in their Food Tour of Britian. It's more about family traditions. We all have them. Let's celebrate them!

Me and OH thought that the cheeey pie thing looked like vomit, would be nice as a topping on something but could feel my heart clogging up looking at the thing. The chilli wasn't exactly a difficult recipe, something I'd cook up as a big pan of comfort food but not exactly inspirational. The samosas etc looked great although was finding myself thinking of ways to use the cast off bits off the edges. To be honest I was mightily disappointed and OH did point out that with the exception of a couple it only showed overweight people which he said would annoy his Scottish mate who gets stressed every time heart disease is linked with diet over the border....

PS - the cakes looked better but no different to the sort of recipes you could find in any decent cake cook book and I did find it funny the way the cake woman glammed up for the cook off thing (wouldn't we all!)

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Oh come off it Alison. I lurve the Hairy Bikers. They make cooking experimental as it should be. Just throw it in - it may work - or again it might not.

No problem with their cooking, most of it is fab but the whole point of this programme was that they wanted to rediscover wonderful old family recipes. Now that sounded like a good fun idea to me. However I don't think that most of what they found was exactly inspirational or worth repeating which I found a real disappointment. I mean, shoving tomatoes and beans in a pan is pretty much what we all ate when I was a student (but without any meat as we couldn't afford it) or for a quick tea and not exactly worth making a fuss over.
