In order that discussion about links doesn't get lost in the Blogs thread, I hope this clarifies the situation with regard to links:

(links within a post or a signature)
    • links from posts/threads within the Forum are perfectly acceptable
    • links to internet sites are acceptable if they are informative and linked directly to the subject being discussed
    • links to other internet sites which are advertising products are not acceptable

There will obviously be times when a moderator has to make a valued judgement about what is acceptable, however, that doesn't happen very often.

In the main these rules are generally kept by all Forum members, but there have been some instances lately where links to inappropriate advertising sites have been made and obviously these have been removed. I hope you will all agree that it is important that the site remains informative and free of direct advertising (other than the google adverts on the bar!).

As indicated in the Blog Thread, it is a matter of trying to achieve the right balance.

Jings Jennie, I thought I had this straight in my head and now I'm confused again. I see the whole point about links to advertising BUT
if the subject being discussed is books, breadmakers, garden equipment or whatever - can we put on a link to where the best deal is to be had.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

No problems with that Alice as it is informative and directly related to what is being discussed.

Ok Alice, you, as an individual, are not allowed to blatantly and directly advertise your shop, crafts or any revenue making source. If however somebody recommends a book for example and you know where its on sale at a good price then by all means let people know.

The whole idea is to stop individuals clogging up the vine with advertising, not to stop people sharing sources of goods or where is cheapest to buy from.

Given that the Vine itself has stopped clogging our screens up with that ucky advertising I'll go along with that Piglet.
