Default Let's lose a bit of weight

(again)

Having a spectacularly poor year with weight watchers last year and ending up the year more than I was to start it (LOADS of great excuses for this lol, the main one being NO SELF CONTROL). I am detemmined to do better this year.

I originally lost 3 stone, have now put one stone back on. I had 4 stone to lose in the first place so now have 2 stone left.

If you wish to join me in trying to lose a bit, LET'S DO IT and help each other.

I will post next week to see if I have lost any. I am making v low fat soup today with the last of my squashes and am writing everything down that I eat, planning the teas and snacks so I can try and stay on track.

And I WILL cut down on alcohol.

I will also (my back permitting) attempt to do my exercise dvd at least once this week. That's an hour of intense excersise, plus the school runs have started again so that's 2 or 3 miles a day depending on whether the toddlie has pre-school as well.

It's easier if I go out, but being at home all day the kitchen is too near lol

Me too please!

I have lost one and a half stone since Oct. but have absolutley loads more to go. I can't believe I've actually lost so much (after years of trying)! I'm afraid it will slow down though, and that I'll loose motivation, but with the help of you gals (and guys) hopefully I'll stay on the straight and narrow. We're going to join the local leisure centre, so hopefully lots of swimming will help too.

Thanks janeyo.

I lost 2 stone last year, but I've got to keep it up, I really could do with getting rid of another 3 . Booze definitely doesn't help, I count the points for the drink, but then having alcohol makes me want to eat more, and to lose the will to resist. I'm easily persuaded too, if someone offers something, I find it very hard to say no.
I weighed in on Tuesday (4lb on over the 2 weeks ), but this cold weather, and now having a snow day off school doesn't help. I have cleaned and washed the floors right through, as they looked a right mess after the decs came down, now I should get on with the marking, but I'm thinking about elevenses (even tho I'm a bit late )

I'm the same as Ginger with 4 stone to lose - didn't bother restraining myself over Chrismas but did wear a pedometer and clocked up a healthy number of steps every day - so the net result was I stayed the same weight! I think I got away with it. Now to get myself motivated for the long haul!! Jacket potato for lunch - and the cheese that I can't resist.

Right I have made it to 12, lunchtime!- hoorah, have had an apple and a banana as snack this morning. I am going to have my almost no point soup with 1 slice of wholemeal bread.

And I have worked up a sweat vacuuming the whole house!

I'm with you too! 4 stone eventually would be good for me, but a couple by May is my first goal. I've managed to put on a whole stone since October when I went off work sick - never realised my job was keeping my weight down - hopefully I'll be back there next month and my life can go back to normal (ish!).
Planning to walk to the shops after lunch (soup!)

Just rememebr Tammy it takes 9 months to grow a baby and you should allow 9 months after havinbg the baby for you body to get back to normal. I am sure this must be longer after twins!

You can have squillions of calories a day if you are b/f!

2 tiny pieces of wheaten bread toasted for breakfast, 2 clementines, one cup-a-soup, 2 half cups of tea, and 4 richtea biscuits . I think that means no lunch then. This hasn't got off to a good start has it?

Start from now Sweetiepea. Don't skip lunch, you'll just get hungry this afternoon and grab something you would be better off avoiding. A big mistake people make when they're trying to lose weight is that they don't eat enough! You (I!) need to make better choices, so you feel satisfied and don't just grab the first thing that falls into your mouth (usually biscuits for me!).

Try and plan for later and tomorrow so you don't grab the biscuits. I have been peeling and cutting up carrots ready so I can just eat them.

Try and recognise your 'weak' times. Most people have a 'dip' at one point in the day -mid morning, mid afternoon or mid evenings. Have a snack ready for then and allow yourself to eat it without feeling bad.

I seem to have all 3 weak points lol! Even though it's snowing like mad I am off outside to give chooks some corn as a distraction from food!

Or if you feel peckish go clean your teeth, the mintyness can sometimes put you off food for a while!

Same here CF. May I join in?

Looking for positives, one thing about my son being in Hospital 24-26 December, was that Christmas (and, indeed, eating) was cancelled! So I didn't put any weight on.

Planning a week in Stratford with my theatre-loving daughter at the end of May, so a couple of stones less to take down with me would be nice...

I'm on board too.

I lost 4 stone to get to goal several years ago. I kept it off for two years , but its slowly crept up to 1 1/2 stone over goal.

I had a really concerted effort before Christmas and lost 1/2 stone of that. 5 1/2 lbs went back on over Christmas, but I've lost 3lbs of that already (according to my scales). My WW leader has just called to say our meeting is cancelled for tonight due to the weather, so no official weigh in for at least another week. That's not a good thing - I need to keep focused!!

My goal is to be fit enough for the Skeleton Walk in May, so I hope to be measuring any loss in inches due to exercise and gains in fitness level. On Tuesday I walked 6.4 miles in 2.5 hours and felt great, so when I can do this comfortably, I'll be upping my distances to around the 8 mile mark.

I am a snacker, so my goal is to be more disciplined about eating between meals and go for healthier choices and better portion control. I hate the word 'diet' so won't use it.

I'm always wary of trying to go on a diet (past experiences/issues with eating disorders), however, I'd like to lose at least a stone.

My issue is always portion size! The meal can be as healthy as anything, but if you eat enough for 2 people, it's not good!

Since we make almost every single thing we eat from scratch (no packets, jars etc), my mission is to eat proper portion sizes of things. I've started weighing out pasta etc and was shocked and horrified at how much we usually eat, compared to how much the recommended portion size is!

I ran to school today, 1.5 miles.
Food: porridge, apple, cup of Millet Rice, 3 bites of Xmas cake. I'm now feeling peckish

I've got rid of all "bad" foods so I can't have a binge, but might well have a beer tonight with my stuffed cabbage leaves.

I would like to lose 2 stone, have started on CB's new Wii Fit Plus, being very good at the moment (30-60 mins a day) boy does it make your calves hurt. As well as three quarters of an hour mucking out each day. I'm still eating relatively healthily but my sin is vino collapso

Look at it in a different way. If you hate the 'D' word - and after all it is a four letter words and therefore swearing - try this 'system'.

I make no promises but it has worked for me to the tune of 2 stone over 6 months about 2.5 years ago and the weight has only just caught up with me....

1) If you are hungry EAT
2) Eat what you want, not what you think you 'should'.
3) Eat consciously - by which is meant don't eat in front of the telly or while reading a book, be aware of each and every mouthful, taste it, savour it and put the cutlery down while doing so!
4) If you think you are full - STOP!

If you can do that you will be surprised at how little you eat. Yes, there will be some wasted food until you get used to it so resign from the clean plate club and clear plates quickly (or yourself from the room) to minimize the picking. But it does work, and you can eat what you want as long as you follow the rules - just be aware of each and every mouthful.

Did anyone see 10 Things You Need to Know About Losing Weight - BBC last June?
A medical journalist (ex-doctor) investigated what helps and what doesn't, complete with scientific experiments to prove/disprove theories. It was a really interesting progamme if it ever comes round again. These are his top 10 tips which he proved to himself.
Don't skip meals
Use a smaller plate
Know the calorific value of food
Don't blame your metabolism (damn!)
Protein staves off hunger pangs
Soup keeps you fuller longer
The wider the choice, the more you eat
Low fat dairy helps you excrete more fat
Exercise carries on burning calories for 22 hours afterwards
Keep moving

Here's a link to someone who was organised enough to list them with some of the science attached!

My problems (as I've probably said before ) are;

Lack of willpower,
Hubby who cooks fab food (and serves up huge portions despite my asking him to curb it),
The inability to leave food on my plate (as a child I was always told 'there's children starving in bla bla...'),
A total LOVE of food,
All that coupled with a HUGE appetite

AND a husband who insists I'm fine as I am (he's obviously blind then!)

I'm managing to stay off the booze at the mo. I'll probably have a glass with dinner at the weekend, but won't be buying any more after this bottle of Red (unopened as yet) has gone. Can't really vouch for Mr. G though

I made some Curried Parsnip Soup for lunch - it was yummy, so I had a second helping...

If you get a huge plate of food, immediately put half in a tupperware box for freezing.
Then you're not wasting it.

If anyone's interested: I've been a size 8-10 most of my life (I'm 40 next year). As you know, I don't drive and get everywhere on my legs or my bike, so I get 5 miles of exercise most days: it's not difficult, it doesn't take long (a mile takes 5 mins on a bike, 20 mins on foot).

When I used to go to college (14 miles by bus) I would get off a stop or three early, and walk the rest.

I do tend to put fat on my bum, thighs and stomach at Xmas time, mainly because of zero exercise and having cream with everything, and it goes on frighteningly fast. At the moment I'm a size 12 bottom half: I guess I've put on half a stone over the winter.

Running is the quickest way for me to lose the fat: even just 5 mins round the block. Sometimes I have to take painkillers first for my neck pain, but the exercise is a natural painkiller, and although I dread the running and hate doing it, I always feel better afterwards.

I don't snack, I don't keep snack food in the house. If I fancy a big bag of Doritoes, I'll have them, but skip a meal.

I eat 3 sensible meals a day, always have breakfast, and sometimes just a bowl of cereal for lunch, but I like a big hot dinner in the evening. I don't eat diet foods, but I do measure my portions, but that's a habit I've always had, it comes from hating waste.

I love a big Indian meal, with lots of different dishes, but I'll eat half and save the rest for the next day. Alcohol is my worst enemy: it's full of empty calories (a bottle of wine is equivalent to one meal = 600 cals) and it makes me want to eat big bags of Doritoes.
If I'm trying to be strict, I'll have a drink, but only after 8pm, or 9pm.

Mr TS is the polar opposite to me: he does no exercise whatsoever, he'll drive to the corner shop rather than walk, and he eats what he fancies & huge portions at every meal. He'll eat non-stop if you let him.
He's now about 5 stone overweight, morbidly obese with high blood pressure, and he gets out of breath just putting his socks on; his father had a heart attack and quad-bypass 10 years ago.
Yet he will not exercise or cut down his food. I've given up trying to help him, it just causes rows. He thinks he can just get his stomach stapled at some point in the future.

My OH is opposite, he eats what he likes, in huge portions and never puts on a pound.
He is a smoker though, but he is cutting right down in preparation for giving up. He wants to give up, but do it in his own way, so I'm not going to interfere.
He may put some weight on when he kicks the fags though, but knowing him, probably not all that much!!

Whilst not always the case, in general we are blessed/cursed genetically with our weight.
If you are born genetically to be generally thin, you will be so unless you really work hard at not being so.
If you are born genetically to be generally not quite so thin, you will be so unless you really work hard at not being so.
As a human race we are also evolving. There are less and less natural size 8's being born currently in Europe, due to changes in our socieoeconomic situation.

Exercise and sensible diet do help to curb weight gain/loss but the above is generally true, hence we all know people who stay slim and the same weight no matter what they eat and others who only have to think about an After Eight mint to balloon a jeans size.

If you are naturally disposed to being not quite so thin, it certainly is possible to lose weight and keep it off, its hard work but it can be done, and I wish all of you good luck if you are trying to do so, for whatever reasons.

Me? I'm an overweight slob but it doesnt really bother me.

Whereas that might be true about frame size, Bob, I don;t think that it is true about BMI (eg fatness). The reason that members of a family are all on the tall side is down to genetics, the reason that members of a family are all fat is because they all eat too much, and don't do enough exercise

But BMI Hazel is a ludicrous system.
If you can honestly tell me that the entire England rugby pack are clinicaly obese and therefore not fit and healthy, I would disagree with you totally.
But according to the BMI charts, they all are.
