  • just like a cocaine addict............! is it normal :)

ok so i imagine if your addicted to cocaine or in fact any other drug you going to buy some each time you go to a party/nightclub!

i think i have a similar problem with the fact theres not one time that i have gone to a shop and not bought seeds "oh oh look at that there half price" or "wow look 2for1" i really do drive clare crazy im suprised she aint kicked me out in the shed in the time we have been together lol

so am i a seed addict or is this the norm within the grow your own world?

i have loads of seeds yet now i have an allotment i think i have not got enough truth be told i probably have about 3 years worth

I have enough seeds to sow plants on every allotment in Wales - and I don't even have one of my own. Its like stamp collecting (I think because I don't) - See a new packet and I have to add it to my collection. Then I record them , index them, sort them into sowing date, or alphabetical or type or whatever else comes into my mind - in fact, anything rather than sow them.
OK, I've confessed - I'm a seed collector rather than a grower. I'll get my coat..........

Oh yes, totally normal Darcy. I have enough seeds to grow veg for the foreseeable future - in all the gardens in town!

Came in handy with the school gardening club though, they loved having a big choice Some of them went home clutching little packets to try at home as well!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

OK guys, I've previously tried to set up a help group for those of us addicted to growing tomatoes ("my name is Vince and I'm addicted to tomatoes")......seems Dr Vince needs to conduct some therapy sessions with regard to that terrible affliction "SAP" (seed addiction purchase).

Take a long hard look at yourself and just come clean - admit it, you're a SAP; immediately you confess, you'll feel as though there's a great weight been lifted off you.

Trust me brothers and sisters, I've been in that place, i've been at such a low ebb that any 99p store or Wilkinsons has proved too strong a draw that I just couldn't resist and had to feed my addiction...an ad in a newspaper promising free seeds if you ordered their catalogue was just manna from heaven....but I've come through it, and so can you.

Just get your seed box out and take a rational look at that packet of caulis with 1000 seeds in it and think, "can I really grow and and eat 1000 caulis ?!"....those spinach and chard you can sow at any time of year, and just say to yourself, "I need no more new seeds, I have enough already". COME ON you can do it, repeat after me, "I need no more seeds, I need no more seeds....."

Take it a day at a time though friends, and report back. Personally, it's been 4 days since my last seed purchase (mangetout for the poly during the winter...)

Together we can beat SAP. We're all with you every step of the way.

Good advice there Vince....but advice I have unfortunately failed to follow as yet!!
I am now importing my "stuff" from America, as its likely to be cleaner and tends not to be cut as much..." purer" I think they call it
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

I suffer from SAP but I'm also a SSADO (Seasonal Seed Aquisition Disorder Obsessive). This frightening disorder occurs annually, usually from September through to December when the garden centres are selling off seeds at 50p or less. I have to go to these places, and spend hours rummaging through unwanted packets, hoping to chance on a very expensive packet marked down to rock bottom. Sometimes these seeds will be so unusual or demanding that I know that I will never grow them but I have to have them, like a comfort blanket.
I'm sorry, I really can't say any more, I'm feeling too emotional, please excuse me..........I have to go and say Goodnight to my seed collections.

I have a Special sort of seed addiction. I have packets of seeds around the house (you might need to teach me to catalogue them VC) but I can never find them when I need them. They totally disappear. So I go buy some more.

Now last year TG I managed to get some into the ground before they got lost.

And then as usual I found all my previous seed purchases afterwards. But can never, ever, ever find them when I need to plant them.

This is why although I have never planted a sunflower seed, I have about 10 packs of them.
And interestingly, I find that even though I can't remember where the seeds are, or what ones I actually had, when I get them out (after I needed them) I have always bought the same type.
                    Amazing!

And really, really frustrating! Help Dr Vince - what shall I do

                        Dr Vince says:

"This might seem harsh Feral, but you're really messed up. SAP seems to be affecting Grapes in South Wales, I just pray for your sake it does not spread to NEW South Wales, but it sounds as though you are, at best, in the early stages of SAP which, left unchecked, can develop into full blown SSADO.

Put bluntly, you have to face your seed demons and go cold turkey. Root out all those half empty parsnip packets and endive envelopes, line em up on the counter, check the "sow by" dates and bin those that are too old to be viable....it's the only way. Yes it's rough, and addiction is a tough nut to crack whether it be for seeds, beer, cushions or lamingtons (yum), but there's a lot of love on the Vine to help get you through it."

Thanks Vince..........although I won't have to throw any out - since there are no half empty packets! They're all still totally full. Halelujah!!! I'm saved

Which one? I have 4 large [35 l] really useful boxes, a large 50l trug, and many trays and showboxes full - and am currently harvesting beetroot and beans so it's filling up each day.

Plus the ones I've put aside for seed swaps, and the VSP that has just been audited and split - and so there is another bag here for Scarey. And the VSP is being seed swapped at the weekend as well.

It's seed crazy in this house!
