  • I've got wood!

At the company I work for we have loads of sheet metal delivered on big pallets. The pallets are stacked and stored until such time as they are taken away to be chipped (at our cost).

I negioated with our production manager, and our driver and had them all delivered to my plot on Saturday. The driver and I spent the next hour and half breaking them up into their constiuent planks.

I now have two large piles of wood planks/posts ready to make rasied beds.

I reckon there's enough there to build a half decent shed!

All excited - sad isn't it?

Nails are already removed. We did the lot on Saturday.

I'm pretty sure I've enough to make all the beds raised/boarded. If I have any left over I might build a new bench as LadyWayne broked mine!

All my beds in the back garden are made from the ol fence that blew down, its taken a while as doing all the work myself(whole garden has had to be started from scratch have found enough bricks under the grass for a base for greenhouse in the future and the patio was mae with slabs that were under gravel in the front garden

the builders working on next doors extension gave me several pallets - i broke some of them down to make a fence across my garden to keep my dogs off the veggies - expecting more pallets from a courier driver i know will build shelving for garage, wood store for my log fire, more greenhouse staging, compost bins etc etc etc

also picked up a vanload of floorboards and floorjoists last year to build a shed with - have cut some of it, but had to stop for the winter - will get back to it in a couple of months - not enough good timber for the whole shed, so will make sides from pallet planks instead

          love it!!

OH works in a lab, all the big bits of seriously expensive equipment come in huge wooden packing cases. We took a large delivery of them in March, a carpenter friend has recycled them into two beautiful chicken houses and there's enough left to make a shed and a 2 storey Wendy house for our Grandaughter.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Agree with you Wayne - I find pallets exciting! Even though Ive got my fence sorted, I cant help keeping my eyes open for any others that may need a new home.

Well done Wayne. I'm sure it will come in useful. I know how expensive wood is - I seem to be buying lots of it.

We get them from our local garden centre who would otherwise be paying to dispose of them. When I drive past I look to see if they are almost out of any of the big bags of compost, pebbles etc and then I swoop down for the empty pallets ! 3 at a time fit nicely in the back of the Galaxy. We have a row of them laid over weed fabric for our potato sacks and growbags to stand on, keeps them further away from the slugs.
odd notes about our kitchen garden project:

You can make quite handy gates out of disassembled pallets, good for lambing pens. There are 2 primary 'construction' materials in Orkney, pallets and baler twine..... It's quite remarkable what you can make from those......
