  • It's good to be back... it's good to be back... HELLO!

Oh wow - the past 4 months have DRAGGED!
A slightly longer telling for the story is on my blog, but when someone who weighs 4 and a half stone more than you lands on your rib cage, it hurts... and puts you out of action for a good long time.

From about mid December or so (when the searing pain in my chest subsided) I've been trying to get to my plot, but every spare moment has seen snow, rain, or frozen solid ground - so the onions, garlic and shallots that were meant to go into the ground in October have just gone in this weekend. I'm fully expecting them to completely fail, but we'll see.

To be back out on the plot, digging and putting things into my bit of earth has been mightily satisfying.

I now see the wisdom of Mel Bartholomew's suggestion in "Square Foot Gardening" to have permanent markers for the squares. Trying to do it with temporary markers was more hassle than it was worth. Added to the to-do list now are square markers.

I'm sure something will grow too, if only the broad beans I put in as they are on time.
I have to admit I'd be a tiny bit disappointed if nothing came up at all, but since I'm so far behind the "right" time I wouldn't be at all surprised if I was planting something new in those squares (I'm using the square-foot method) come spring time.
I'm getting really excited about the new season now I can actually get to my plot though.
The rain we were promised the past two days never materialised so the ground is getting into better and better condition for digging now.
I've already decided to spend my (probably extended) lunch break down there and will probably be making it a regular thing too. 30 mins to an hour a day, plus a good session at the weekends should see all my delayed winter jobs done before time.

Vicky - "ouch" is right. I could hardly move for the first couple of weeks!
