Has anyone tried one of these they are to stop your dog roaming i'v just had a twenty mile trip to fetch my dog back as someone found him and took him to a vet where they scanned him and phoned me He was in the next door neighbours field when they picked him up if they had left him alone he would have come home (didnt take the spaniel as he is a bit wary of strangers ) hope someone has experience of these as they arnt cheep

I've no personal experience of them but have seen them work brilliantly with a few families, some of whom have several dogs. A cable is buried (or placed safely) around the boundary. When turned on, the cable emits a signal that is picked up by a receiver each dog wears on its collar. When the dog goes too close to the boundary it receives a mild 'shock'. Over time the dog learns the boundary. Not very technical I'm afraid, but that's the gist of it.
A good beginning is half the work.

probably cheaper to set up an electric fence with 2 wires at a suitable height attached to a car battery, wont take them long to learnComment

No first-hand experience, I'm afraid, but I did once work next to a property with leccy wire round the garden boundary, and was told it kept the dog in. It was a foot off the ground, and the dog was a large Lab, so it could have easily just stepped over. So, I guess it must work.

Saw these advertised years ago and me and a mate came to the thought that if the dog was running at full tilt and went over the wire and got a shock would it know whether it was a shock to keep it in the garden or a shock to keep it out of the garden, a running chain may be the answer.Comment

My Aunt had several dogs and a large garden open to the road, she had one of these and the dogs never strayed. She reckoned they were wonderful!Comment
