  • I'm prematurely excited

On a recent visit to our local public house we were sat with some friends and our respective babbies. Bean is by nature a happy chappy, and our friends' baby is unfortunately the opposite.

Anyhoo - there is a pub dog, and also one of the regulars had his dog there too.

The pub dog (Henry) is apparently some kind of French Hound (looks a little like a longer haired Basset Hound), and the other dog (Paddy) is a mongrel. Henry is a chilled out dude, and Paddy's a little more wired. Paddy has a trick whereby he nicks a beer mat from a table and brings it to you for you to throw - frisbee style, and for him to catch (which he does with aplomb).

    I digress.

On seeing the dogs, Bean burst out laughing - absolutely cracking up every time they moved. Then, when Paddy started displaying his skills, well.

His (Bean's) little face lit up everytime they came back in the room.

Now, here's why I'm prematurely excited.

For years I've wanted a dog (I grew up with them), but we've never been in a position to have one - what with both of us working full time yadda yadda yadda. LadyWayne has always been more a cat person, and we've had cats in the past.

However, on seeing Bean's reaction she said "We have to get a dog!", to which I obviously agreed whole-heartedly.

Yet, we still won't get one immediately as we're not about enough during the day time at present. Things may very well change in the next year or two anyways as LW's parents are likely to move back down South when circumstances unfortunately change for them up North, which will mean they'll likely be around quite a lot. Plus, we found out recently that one of our neighbours is a dog sitter (we just thought she had lots of dogs...).

So, I'm excited at the prospect of having a dog, yet I'm not counting my chickens.

I was banned from visiting rescue kennels some years ago as I always seemed to "bond" with at least one of the dogs.

Now that's what I call premature Wayne but if it feels right, go for it my friend.

Good excuse Wayne (Bean wants a dog!), go for it when you've got everything in place to make sure you have a happy dog as well as a happy Bean (& Wayne!)

Absolutely, but also - not leave it too long so that you (I mean, Bean) miss out of the fun and love to be had

The beer mat catching dog sounds like a Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen which would make an excellent family dog, good natured, friendly and child-loving. Happy little dogs!!

T'was Paddy (the mongrel) that has the beer mat skills.

That Petit dog looks similar, but Henry was quite a bit bigger from what I can tell by the photos.

On account of my own stature I'm not really a little dog person. That said, we'd never be able to home a Great Dane or a Newfoundland (one of my faves).

I waited 17 years until we had our first dog and now would not be without him, we waited until I was around most of the day, the kids love him, he is great security and makes us laugh every day, and the best thing of all no matter how bad a day we all have there is always that very waggy tail waiting for you. Don't leave it too long though.

If I could have a dog I would go for a Schipperke (Belgian barge dog) - Snowdrop says they are totally adorable, spunky, happy chaps with masses of personality

We always said we'd get a dog when I stopped working. And now I have, I don't want one!!
I'm so much enjoying my freedom of doing what I want when I feel like it ( well...apart from scrubbing stone walls/painting/gardening/general household stuff) that I now value my own time. For the first time since I started work I don't need to clock watch. Maybe I'm being selfish- and I know I'd love a companion-but I'm not ready yet!

I think it's a lovely idea Wayne if LW is happy with it- maybe if we'd got one earlier I wouldn't feel the way I do now.
A boy and his dog- how wonderful for Bean...my OH says he used to stroke his dogs silky ears when he was a nipper/teenager and share his problems - priceless eh?

I reckon LW is around enough for one early HW. Animals seem to help with children's maturity and honestly I reckon just go for it, sooner the better in Bean's opinion by the sounds

My Bro got a dog when my first niece was little for the same reasons.

However when he went on holiday he didn't come back. He was the soppiest floppsiest dog in the world, but he needed the walking and my bro just didn't have the time, so the friends who looked after him when they went on hols offered to keep him.

I'd recommend borrowing one for a few weeks first [do you know anyone who has a dog and usually puts them in kennels for holidays]....just so that you know what it's like with child and dog?

It will be brilliant HeyWayne. I am in the fortunate position of not having to work. My two hounds are my constant companions. I even made a special 'play-pen' area on the lottie so that I know they're safe when we visit. They can be expensive to keep, what with pet insurance and so on but they are worth every penny.

Bean is bound to love growing up with a doggy pal. I still have fond memories of the dogs we had when I was a child.

If you have weighed up all the pros and cons and the pros come out on top go for it. I'm sure you wouldn't regret it.
It is the doom of man, that they forget.

You'll never regret it Wayne. Dexter is one of the best things that ever happened to me (apart from Mr DDL of course). He brings so much joy not only to our lives, but his Auntie Margaret as well. Can't wait to hear all about your pooch when you do get one.
Have you thought of any names yet?

My sister had a dog when her kids were small and when that dog died my sister said no more dogs, it wasnt until the kids were much older that she admitted how near she was to getiing another one.
My middle sister as a teenager came home with a farm dog without asking mum if we could have one, mum went spare but let us keep her. What a nightmare she was, we couldnt catch her, she jummped through a shut window trying to follow mum, she chewed all the skirting boards, the chairs, anything. In the end mumsaid she had to go she was after all a farm dog.

Wow HW - ain't you just glad you had Bean - a whole new world opens up for you in every direction and it all centres on a wonderful little boy, not yet 1. That is the best.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?
