  • Horrid afternoon

Went shopping this afternoon and on way home I saw a dog in the road, I stopped as it didnt look right, I put my flashers on and on the other side another car stopped. It was a bull terrier, amaciated and full of mange, his eyes had sunk and he was finding it painful to walk. We managed to get him to the pavement and as I returned to my car to move it, I got a load of abuse from other motorists. I moved the car and made a makeshift lead but he collapsed. I then sped to the vets, which luckily is 1 min away, they came out and ran to the scene, where he wasnt looking too good. Vet picked him up and took him to the surgery.

I phoned an hour later and they said they had called dog warden as they cannot treat him as who is going to pay for the treatment? I cannot repeat what I said down the phone but nevertheless when my own dogs need boosters or anything else, I shall not being going there - and to top it all - they call themselves and animal hospital. I have no idea where the bull terrier is but I will start investigating Monday as dog warden phoneline was an answering message.

I hate the way some folks can let a dog get into that state, I would wish the same on them.

the B'tards aside that allowed the poor dog to get in that condition, what self respecting vet denies treatment because they don't know who is going to pay???

is that what it has come to? I am stunned.

i'm gobsmacked by the vet, ours always treats animals like this, then worries about the cost once they have called the rspca ....

but some people should be banned forever from keeping animals, why on earth do they get them in the first place ..... makes me really angry

When my brother found a cat in a bad way, it had got its paw caught in its collar, and it had cut into its body, then got maggots, the vet we took it to said they had to treat it under the animal welfare laws. Eventually it was taken in by Cats Protection, but it was in such a bad way, it was put down.

There was a piece in the news last year about a heart attack victim who died just across the road from a hospital. Medical staff said they couldn't attend to him because of health and safety regulations.

Poor thing, if you do find out where he is, let us know. Perhaps calling the RSPCA and telling them what you did and where he was taken may help. They may be willing to follow up on it and try to find out where he came fom originally.

Can someone whose profession it is to treat animals be that uncaring? Apparently so. But then again, I believe that if you're ill in America and haven't got insurance, they don't want to know about people either. Is that true?

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
