  • Help with ideas for hospital stay wanted please!

OK, some of you may know that my sister has cancer for the second time.

Her treatment has been going well, so much so, in fact that they have cancelled her last 2 chemo cycles as they are happy with how everything is. This is great news, however, she is due to have a stem cell transplant as well.

Initially, she wasn't due to go in for this until November, however it's now been moved, as she has progressed well, and she will be going into hospital in the next 3 weeks.

This means total isolation for 6-8 weeks minimum. We can visit (the hospital is 70 miles away) but it'll be a "behind glass" visit. Not even masked and gowned!

I want to put some stuff in a box for her to take in to keep her occupied. She can take her laptop in, so we can keep in contact through emails and FB, but I'm fairly sure she won't be able to use it all day as she'll be getting various treatments etc.

So.... I've got a couple of small cross-stitches and a sudoku book; but have run out of inspiration!!

    Ideas please Grapes!!

What sort of things does she like to do and what are the restriction on what she can take in?

She can't have any food/drink/edible items in there with her, nor things like essential oils, or cosmetics (she has to wash in hospital disinfectant type stuff), but isn't restricted on paper/material based craft items, as long as they go in with her on her first day

She likes making her own cards, cooking, and is very open to learning new craft-skills (hence why I put the cross stitch together), as well as being very outdoorsy

I was wondering about quilting or some other sewing/stitching that could be done by hand by someone with a lot of time to spare?

O.W.G, thats fantastic news for your sisiter, not the stay in hospital, but the fact her treatment is going well. How about some letters from different members of the family to be opened on different weeks of her stay? Word searches, Photos of loved one's, MP3 player, Journal so she can write her thoughts down. Tell her all the very best from me. xx

I recently enjoyed putting together a memory album. If she likes card making she may enjoy this. If you both collect together old photos from your childhood onwards, postcards, mementos etc it could be themed on a holiday or school days, family tree, a home etc.

Okay, piles of books and DVD's. Crochet is an easy craft to do lying down and you can make lovely items quite simply. Cross stitch is a good idea - or a tapestry kit with a frame so it is easy to handle, some kits have lovely outdoors themes so might help with the lack of being able to go out. If she knits, the 'ingredients' to make a nice Aran or Fair Isle sweater would keep the brain and hands busy for a good length of time. I am always surprised how much time can vanish when I get involved in a pattern!

Glad to read it is all going well for her.

If she likes cooking- how about her creating her own cookery book?
She could check through recipes on the internet and download them with piccies- and then when she's well enough could try them out and tweek them to he own tastes.
She could include all her own favourite family recipes too- different courses for different seasons .

Mind you- if she's not feeling too well, maybe the though of food might make her feel queezy???

That being the case- how about her replanning her garden- and look up plants/trees/bushes/ornament's she'd love to have??..she'd be learning as she goes along too- which can never be a bad thing!

                  Jigsaws ?

She could plan her virtual world tour- with piccies and read up about the places and surrounding areas?

OOOoooo...she could start thinking about her C*******s card /pressi list??

hope all goes well with her x

Glad to hear it's geing so well OWG.

I used to do card making and got into jewellery making as a result of making some beady embellishments for my cards... I found it really relaxing and it's so nice to make bits for friends and family and see them wearing them!

I've still got tonnes of beads and some spare tools etc. - I'll PM you!

May I suggest; an eye mask as they turn the lights on far too early.

And all the above. I wish her all the best, especially with the food they laughingly 'serve' the patients.

Really glad to hear your sister's progressing so well.
How about a latchhook kit. I made a great rug for my son with one and they're a bit like doing a puzzle whilst making something useful.
Fully support the DS and books ideas too. They have kept me occupied many a lonely evening in hotels.

Ear plugs, hospitals are always really noisy, they are as essential as an eye mask.
A jigsaw? With one of those mat things to roll it in.
Word search books and lots of puzzle magazines. (and pens)
And her xmas cards, she can write them all early! lol
