  • Grrr!! Allotment Judging!

Sorry guys, just gotta have a bit of a rant! Our council have a yearly allotment judging for their best allotment competition, which is usually scheduled for last week and the week before, so 3 weeks ago the allotment site had a tidy up day where lots of folks set to tidying up and lots of folks (us included) made sure their plots were immaculate ready for the judging. All well and good so far.....

.... but Mr D just came in from the plot (I'm off sick n couchbound with a bad back so cant go to the plot at the moment) where he set to harvesting the garlic and some of the overwintering onions, only to be interrupted by the judging committee, who were at the site to do the judging, last in the borough to be judged again! (we were the last ones to be judged last year, same again this year, even tho we were told we would be earlier this year!)

The judges walked onto our first plot, ignoring Lee, decided that they didnt like the fact that the side of the plot (which borders onto the fence and hedge) wasnt easily accessible, walked back off again, and down the next path, stopping where 2 of the broad bean plants were leaning over the path and turned around, went down the next path and looked in dsgust at the raspberry fedge (30' of raspberry canes in an edible hedge between the 2 plots) at the far end and didnt even bother looking at half of the stuff growing in our first plot!

They then looked at our neighbouring plot, plot 2, refusing to brush past the jerusalem fartichokes to reach the back and thus ignoring a quarter of that plot too!

Lee was absolutely livid! He said they had a toffee nosed attitude and that because our crops were doing so well that they were overhanging the paths that they were not happy as it made the plot look 'untidy' to them! It seemed to Lee that the fact that our plot is exremely productive with crops (and thus doesnt have as many flowers as some of the other plots on the allotment) counted against us, as did the fact that being last for judging meant that our garlic and some of our onions (that only 2 weeks ago were looking fab) have now died back ready for harvesting, meaning that the plot doesnt look as full as it would have 2 weeks ago!

Now I'm sure none here will argue with me when I state that the reason we GYO is for the taste of organic homegrown ultra fresh fruit and veg, plus the fun and the pride that comes from growing it all for ourselves, and the exercise, and even the self sufficient aspect and money saving, but I would be remiss if I didnt say that it would be nice if it was something that was also recognised by others in as much as we'd love to receive a commendation at the yearly awards! (I'm not even interested in winning the best allotment comp, or even in getting a highly commended certificate, a humble commendation would do for us both!)

We cant get hold of a copy of the judging criteria to see what they are looking for, but if its a tidy plot with organised beds, crops that are doing exceptionally well, all beds utilised and labelled, evidence of recycling and environmental awareness, then we should be receiving reasonable marks, not having some toffe nosed git turn their nose up at our plot!

    Grrrr, rant over! Sorry!
    Blessings

As the judging is by said toffee nosed gits with such little understanding of the practical side of allotment keeping then is the award worth winning in the first place. Surely the reward is in the eye of the plot-holder like yourself - with a tidy well labelled, productive, yet environmentally sensitive and efficient site.

Don't worry about it Mrs D. You know what a fab plot you have - and so do we.
Sometimes you just can't work out what some people are about and what they're looking for.
But the results aren't in - so who knows.
If it really upsets you then just take the view that you're not willing to be judged by these people and don't enter.
You'll still heve your fab plot and all your lovely produce even if you don't have that little place card.
And I do hope your back will be better very soon. Chin up.

I got the same attitude when I entered my plot for the allotment section of the Britain in Bloom contest.
My plot is very colourful, with flowers mingled amongst the veg, and curvy paths not straight ones ... and they didn't like it one bit. Not even my blue shed with clematis & passionflower scrambling all over it.
I felt really patronised by them, and won't bother to enter again.

This is what the list at our site says from memory reading list this morning
                    Husbandry 50 points
                    Variety of Vegetables 50 points
                    Variety of Flowers 50 points
                    Quality of Vegetables 50 points
Use of Green houses and sheds 50 points
Waterbutts and compost bins 50 points
Paths points detucted for untidy -30 points
There may have been more but not many and I think I have the points awarded correct. The list is put on a notice board on the site for everyone to see, if you ( us ) dont want to take part covers up their plot numbers.
Seems a bit mean that they dont advertise what they are looking for.

It doesn't matter what anybody else thinks of your plot so long as it's how you want it so don't worry what they think. I have designed mine and grow mine how I want and what suits me, I know it won't suit everybody but to be honest that doesn't really bother me so long as I'm getting more of the lovely fruit and veg of it as I am. Have no idea if they do comps like that in Warrington but it'd be far too stressful to me to enter as I'd hate to feel that somebody was judging me on something so personal. But then again, I'm not competitive so that could make a difference.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I agree with the 'doesn't matter what people like that think', but I also appreciate the need for a small rant about them!
Do you feel just a bit better for letting off steam?
Flowers come in too many colours to see the world in black-and-white.

Deffo feel better for letting off steam, thanks guys!

The allotment judging isnt something that you can enter or choose not to, its something that they do anyways, so its not like we have a choice to enter or not, hence the fact that although we know we've got a great couple of extremely productive plots that we both feel look good, you can't help but feel as though you've been 'looked down on' if you dont at least get a commended (they can give out as many commended and highly commended as they want, there's no limit)!

The prizes are worth having for the top plot (£500 of vouchers, £250 and £125 for the best 3 plots), but thats not the point, I know with us both working full time that we arent going to compete with some of the retired folks who can spend as much time as they like on their plots, but thats not the point, its the principle of the thing, feeling patronised and penalised because our plots dont measure up to their ideal! Grr!

As I said we can choose to enter or not we just have to cover up our plot number. Glad you feel better after your rant, I know I would never win as we have a couple of very competitive plot holders on our site and as there are a few sites all with much more experienced gardeners I stand no chance. At least they give us a list of what they are looking for so you know what to do.
Good luck anyway you may get a suprise lol.
