English Fancy Dress

We have a number of people here who are in or have been in HR so I'm sure you will get a definitive answer. An employer can enforce a company dress code or the wearing of company uniforms but I can't see how "fancy dress" can be treated as either of those.

How about dress like a Chav - current period in history, then they'll not ask her again. Seriously I don't see how they can enforce that she do this...it is not as if she's working for the charity or BBC is it?

As soon as I'm told that something is compulsary I don't want to do it so am glad that it's optional here as I'm happy to join in by choice. We used to get bullied into doing some charity things here and they certainly aren't joking so I understand your wife's concerns. There were lots of complaints and it's much better now. I don't like fancy dress much and would feel very nervous coming into work like that - would be like those hideous own clothes days that we had at school which were just and excuse for the trendy kids to make the rest of our lives a misery by looking down on us............ still makes me shudder

Your wife is fortunate to be asked to wear English cultural dress (whatever that may be). In Wales we're expected to wear black pointy hats or a Dai-cap and coal dust covered clothes.

Somebody here has just suggested Morris Dancing outfit so am not sure it's any better than the Welsh alternative................

Can she borrow your PJ's ( if you have any)- and dressing gown?
Maybe her own would do the trick??
Or her Mom's nightie etc????

ahem...only some of us can sing in the way that most people would recognise as singing.....

IK hate all that fancy dress children in need thing too, so i would do a Dom Jolly and get a squirrel outfit, find someone else to do the same, then spend all day fighting.....or do the snail costume and go everywhere as a snail. She might make it all the way to where she works before she has to turn round and go home again

well I did suggested Naughty School Girl, but guess we will save that for at home :P hehe...

She is going to borrow my England T-Shirt and go as a football player.
Her big boss was defo saying she HAD to wear fancy dress. and was very restrictive, but she spoke to the deputy and she said that football player was fine, and that the big boss could not force her or send her home.

So all cleared up now, and thanks all for the suggestions.
Was very frustrated with what they were saying, as I would have had the head office on the phone my self. but she is a little more reserved hehe...

She is from England, so she said she would come in her own clothes then.
And basically they said no, she is not allowed.

I am still looking into the fact of her being forced to "do fancy dress" as well... its just not right!

Her mistake was asking if her own clothes would be ok. Always always be one step ahead of these fools that force people to be cheery.

I have only done fancy dress once, well twice if you count going to Ben's 40th in 80s fancy dress which was just my normal clothes with a bandana. If they forced me to wear it at work then I'd rather be sent home to be honest. I'd rather take that challenge and point out I'd rather donate the money to the charity that it would have cost me to make/rent/buy a costume. People know me well enough to know I don't 'do' certain things, including TV - so the thought of what I'd come up with if forced to do something against my will would scare them more than the thought of taking a disciplinary out on me.

Forced charity does not begin at work!

A few characters spring to mind - that would be fun! I love Two Sheds fancy dress costume though!
I'd try for Queen Victoria - later period - as I have the figure for it!
