As the Title says dont forget to defrost the turkey, mine is sat in the cellar as its the only place I can do it without the cat getting at it. Mine says to defrost for 36 hours so took it out this morning to make sure. Its pretty cold in the cellar so takes longer. Happy Eating

Mine is still running around the farmyard. Last year I said I wouldn't order one from the local farm again as it was a good year for turkeys and the 'about 18lb' one that I ordered grew to be 24lb+, I could barely get it in the oven. But it was so delicious that I ordered one for this year back in the summer, I just hope it's an anorexic one.Last edited by bluemoon; 23-12-2008, 12:18 PM.Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Thanks for the heads up - I just mine out the freezer. However, Mr Sheds just had a phonecall ~ and he might have to go offshore tonight.
I'll cook the bird anyway, and freeze it if necessary. We might be having Xmas after Boxing Day this year! All gardeners know better than other gardeners." -- Chinese Proverb.

Bought a frozen, Free Range "Taste The Difference", one this year. Only F/R one I could afford. Hope it will be ok.

Doesn't the turkey need to hang for a while for the rigor mortis to go from the muscles? My father used to do Christmas turkeys, and we had finished all the killing and plucking by 20th. It's my sisters birthday on 21st, and we were always weighing and pricing by then.
The first year we were married Dad promised us a turkey, the one he'd put aside for us (12lb) was needed to fill an order, so we ended up with an 18lber (no guests!). I had to empty the roasting dish halfway through cooking, because the juices started to flood the oven.
No one likes turkey much now, so I'll get the pork, beef and chicken out tomorrow. They were bought fresh a while ago, and have been waiting patiently in the freezer.Last edited by BarleySugar; 23-12-2008, 12:49 PM.I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

Hi Jackie!
I thought late last night about my turky, got it out of the freezer b4 I went to bed. I did not want to forget it then find it was too late At the moment it is shut in one of the colder rooms of the house to keep it away from the cats Think I might put it in the garage when I get home tho then I know it wont be too warm.
Have a good day all!

Thats why I leave mine in the cellar its cold and dry I usually put it in a roasting tin covered with tea towels to thaw but when I got it out I suddenly remembered chucking the old tin out so I have turkey but no roasting dish so guess what I need to buy tomorrow. I blame it on me cold.Gardening ..... begins with daybreak

oh for a cellar!
new builds are rubbish, all i have is a cupboard under the stairs and that has the chest freezer in it.
but a cellar? wine racks, space for stocks, all that equipment i could fit in...........ok, i'll stop at the wine racks and room for the turkey to defrost
