  • Doing my head in

I have always been a bit suspicious of Anti Virus programmes but agree they are a necessity of IT life. If, like me, you are a bit thick and desperately trying to be with it they attempt to confuddle and confuse. Right! I am approaching the end of a trial run of AVG 9.?? and am being requested to BUY BUY BUY. I do not intend to BUY! but it appears they have me in their sights and will not let go. I tried to download the AVG 9 Free a few minutes ago and all hell broke out. I was informed "MSN was shut down to protect your computer". I thought this was my computer! How come someone out there decide it is not!
Unfair play is what I call it.

AVG is free. It's not a free trial, it just IS free.
do you have any other virus programmes running as well?

Not always Two Sheds. I had AVG 8 Free. I was warned that this was soon to be discontinued and invited me to try AVG 9? I was desperate at the time because I suspected malware/virus. The 30 day trial is soon to be up and I am being prompted again and again to buy (at a reduced price lol). The 'free' editions are not the full monty but sufficient for home use. That is certainly good enough for me. I have no data worth pinching.

I use ZoneAlarm, it is a paid for software but (for me) my work (and computer) is more important the really cheap price you pay for it.

If you have two (or more!) AVs running it will cause a pickle and they will fight for supremacy - bosses devils that they are

So I presume I should delete of the AVG pro trial and download another of my choice. Think I will try Avast.

Remove it via add/remove programs in the control panel

Just download the free program, not the pro trial. AVG bury it deep within their website but it is there.

I can't stand virus software, it's often more intrusive than the viruses themselves!
AVG and Norton are the two most popular AND in my opinion the most annoying.

I use Antivir, it's free and very discreet.

I've just had a Norton update on my screen that had a 'Continue' button, but no 'Cancel' or 'Close' options and it didn't appear in the applications section of the task manager. I had to search through the processes to close it. Totally made my point!

This scenario is where I started doing my head in. I cannot download AVG free whilst on the AVG 9 pro. trial.

I looked around the AVG forum for you. This answer is from AVG:
" reinstallation is the only known possible way how to downgrade AVG Trial (Pro) to AVG Free "

so, you have to uninstall the Pro version, then reinstall the free version: "Start Uninstalling AVG 30 days trial. A dialog comes asking if you really want to uninstall AVG or downgrade to AVG Free. As simple as that"

                            any use Bren?
