  • Do you think this is cheeky?

I offered to grow a couple of tomato plants for a friend who will be away for almost the whole of April and so couldn't tend them.

I asked how many they wanted and they said 10. I thought this was a bit cheeky - I was expecting 3 or 4.

    What do you think?

10 at 50p each should pay you for a couple of packets of seeds...... alternatively they could grow their own? or accept 4 free?

You offered to grow a couple, and they asked for 10! Can they not count?

You didn't say how big they would be....if they were still in modules [sown in a week or two] then you'd not be taking up much room.

I suppose it depends on how much room you've got spare...

I guess it depends on how you said and yep, how big they'll be, if small then 2 or 10 wouldn't be much difference? But why didn't you just say 'oh thats a lot'?

I said I'd do some for them ready fo them to take over the care when they get back, I had no plans to charge them for them.

I had an email (we live a bit apart) and she said her hubby had asked for 10. She did say in it that she thought he was being a bit greedy, but I guess if you don't ask you don't get! She also said they had lost all theirs 2 years running from blight.

I don't really have any room for 10 extras! was going to give them a couple of mine that I have already grown.

Think I will start some off for them tonight and make sure they only need potting to 3 inch pot, then ask for the pots back when they have potted them on.

Just tell them you don't have room for 10 and tell them how many you can do for them. I'm sure they won't complain.

Reminds me of a friend of ours who dropped us at the airport in our car - then proceeded to use it all week to drive himself to work (it was the sweetie papers under the seats that gave him away - then we checked the fuel tank: empty).

If they are F1 hybrids you'll be lucky to get 10 seeds in the packet! If they aren't F1's you'll probably have loads left anyway (I always do) and potting them on shouldn't be a hardship.

Just think, if they come back of holiday with a splendiferous present for you!..................... how embarassed you will be if you give them two tomato plants!

I'm with Snadger here. After spending the day planting seeds I'm not sure there is too much difference between looking after 3 / 4 or 10 plants. Especailly if they aren't F1's. The tomatoes I planted today came from packets that had 250 and 300 seeds.

Can't you just grow them in a half seed tray, and give that to them when they come back/ That way you won't get involved in potting on etc? Of course, make sure you ask for the tray back!

That's a good idea McBee as long as they don't get too big before I see them. I will do that.

I have plenty of seeds so no worries about that. I am told they only like 'little toms' though, might sow a 'big boy' in there just to confuse them lol

hmmm, it depends. we know a guy who for the last three years has given me his 'left over' tomato plants, and there have never been less than about 20, he also gives me left over peppers, about 15 last year etc... so maybe if she/he has had similar experience that might not think 10 unreasonable?
