I like her! My dear ma never taught me to cook because she hated it (it showed in the food she served!) so I never had a cookery teacher until Delia came along. Every recipe of hers that I try seems to work out fine! (Mind you, I'm the same with Nigella and Tamasin recipes too!)Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

It took me a while to get into Delia, then when I did, yep, excellent for the basics - and as good a cook as I am, (not said by me) but I can always refer to her and get the basics right that Im not so sure of! Cooking rice is a classic!Bernie aka DDL

Although she comes across as a bit of a school marm she's quite happy to throw in the odd 'cheat' now and again. As I'm sure we all do just to make life a little easier.S*d the housework I have a lottie to dig

I didnt see it but I have my very own Delia, my sister is known to family and friends as Delia because of her cooking skills, alas something I am completly useless at. She took on my mum and nans skills learning to cook when she was young as mum was at work and she being the eldest of three girls got it first hand. I feel as though I am letting my daughter down as we dont do cooking together mainly because I am so rubbish at it and Idont have the paitence.Gardening ..... begins with daybreak
and ends with backache

Lady Delia of this parish is quite simply brilliant.
Simple and
Brilliant.
Easy to follow, never once had a failure with her cooking, and I still rate her pancake recipe as the best I've ever tried.Last edited by bobleponge; 02-12-2009, 09:28 AM.Bob Leponge
Life's disappointments are so much harder to take if you don't know any swear words.

We've got her "complete" book and her baking book. Both are fantastic. Easy to use, recipes always work out, and some great recipes I would just never think of. Her and Mrs B are the bibles. Really enjoyed the programme, and thought her "whacking" everything in the oven was very "hip"!!

I know a lot of people adore her and think she's great and all that - but I just don't like the woman. There's just something about her - can't put my finger on it.
But then, not everyone likes Jamie Oliver, and I think he's great.

Is the new book much different to the old one?
Re Delia, I don't think her presentation skills are very good as she always looks terrified and she is sometimes a bit out of touch (in her cheat programme she spend about 5 minutes explaining that you could buy ready made mayonaise rather than make it yourself and clearly hasn't realised that most people just pick up a jar of the stuff already) but her books are excellently laid out and the very easy to follow. I was given her complete cookery course over 20 years ago and still use if for reference. And at least her show is about cookery rather than the likes of Jamie etc which have too much other stuff in for my taste.
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I don't 'do' celebrity chefs, but I have to admit that Delia is probably the most accessible of them all and although I've never watched the T.V. programmes I have owned a couple of her books over the years. OH and I have been married for more than 30 years though and Christmas has become so bogged down in traditions that we either brought with us from our parents (and grandparents) or which seemed to develop spontaneously on their own, that anything which changes anything one iota at Christmas will simply not be tolerated by our kids, so although I quite like the idea of lots of new stuff it simply isn't going to happen. We do still cook our turkey using Delia's method from her 'How to Cook' book though, and have always done so. I think the starter of parsnip and apple soup might be an old Delia idea too, but couldn't swear to it.Last edited by bluemoon; 02-12-2009, 01:28 PM.Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.
