  • Christmas leftovers

I was given a food hamper from a well known retailer for Xmas which contained, among other stuff, a Xmas cake (bleah) and a jar of brandy butter (which was OK but not used up), and a jar each of cherry and chocolate (?) conserve, and cranberry chutney (both of which I gave to my bro).

The cake has fed the birds for over a week, but the brandy butter was sitting in the fridge, opened and half used. What to do with the remainder?

I've made fudge. Brandy and raisin flavour, by adding the jar of brandy butter and chucking in a handful of raisins to my basic fudge recipe.

    It tastes pretty good

What do you do with unwanted leftover food gifts?

I'm crying at the thought of Christmas cake being fed to the birds A Christmas pudding made it's way to me in a parcel, and was greatly enjoyed, but no cake. And I love it. Slovaks don't have anything like it.

Pass them on to a friend with a large extended family. There is usually someone who will appreciate them.

Although I rarely get unwanted food gifts, my friends know me rather well and most food gifts come in a bottle.

Sounds delicious Mothhawk but agree if you don't want it give it to the kids next door. Kids don't taste it! They don't leave anything son #2 has been on hockey tour...he text me yesterday :: to say he played well and ate..200carbs for lunch! Nevermind breakfast, tea and snacks. Teenagers eat loads! Nothing left here!

Not much I won't eat unless it's cheap processed rubbish so not a problem. Love love love fruit cake but always make ours but not started it yet as we gave other stuff which will go off first. Normally end up eating it in Feb, something to look forward to

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Alas, the kids next door are highly suspicious of anything that doesn't come in a takeaway box. gave the lad (seven) a handful of raspberries straight off the canes, and after poking them cautiously, he threw them away. I could not induce him to put one in his mouth. Sad sign of the times.

Unfortunately you often come across a few of those My boys over the years have had lots of kids to stay, I think my chocolate cake is a lure anyway, one kid once wouldn't eat breakfast and his Dad picked him up to get MacD's before rugby my boys were horrified!

I've not really got much left from Xmas.
The carcass and some meat went into soup which is frozen.
I'll freeze the last 6 mince pies to have with ice cream in the summer
A slice of cake will be put aside for Easter
All chocolate off the tree was guzzled when we took the tree down.

I've got half a tub of celebration chocolates, so I'll probably share those out at Book Club...
Left over cranberry sauce will be enjoyed over the next few weeks with roast chicken or in butties.

I do however ( cover your ears if you are of a nervous disposition ) have a dozen snail vol-au-vents which need eating fairly soon......

How I remember those times when my son was young and he had friends to stay over.

One would only eat pizza, but he would take all the toppings off.

One, when asked if he liked something, would say I am not sure can I try it. He was good because he discovered lots of things he really like at my house.

And one who lived with dad, no mum, would wolf down everything, veggies and all and always looked amazed that he could have seconds and thirds, bless him.

Another one who would eat anything and was really impressed at all the ice cream I made, and that he could come to the freezer and choose, still gives me a bear hug when ever we meet, and asks if I still make ice cream.

I usually cooked for all comers, would put it on the table, and tell them all 'this is what is for tea, I don't mind if you don't like but just don't tell me or moan about it. Take what you will eat.

After a few visits to the Bee house they got the idea and nothing much was left.

And as I cook for my granddaughter, so far she will try everything. Every time my fingers are near her mouth she automatically opens it as she thinks it will be something tasty.
