  • Chilly Horses!

Anyone started rugging up their horses yet? After a couple of cold nights and cold mornings, we decided to rug ours up last night, only for the nights at the moment as they are still outside 24/7, but at least it can take the chill off as they were so cold the other morning....poor little loves! Another month before they come in at night, so at least they are a snug until then and they do have a lovely warm field shelter as well. Anyone else got spoilt horses?

I don't have any horses, but my neighbour has horses, ponies and donkeys in my fields. He rugged the horses last weekend.
A good beginning is half the work.
Praise the young and they will make progress.

Yup!!...mine is in the Lake District- he's been in at night for 3 weeks now( and yup- a thin rug too!)

..but then again- he is 18 so he's due a few comforts don't ya think???

Had he been over here- he'd still be out all day- with a couple of hrs in during the day, but rugged up at night just for the past week probably.
It's been our second night of frost here!

Mine and his old mate have thin waterproofs on, but the 2 'toughies' don't yet. I put a thin stable rug under my one's waterproof the other day as the night time temperature had dropped a lot.

Yesterday however he was sweating like the proverbial, but when I went back with a head collar he wouldn't let me catch him to take it off!

Ours stay out as long as possible, I try to only bring them in at night in the new year when it gets wet, as they don't seem to mind the cold if they've got hay out there and a feed in the evening.

Went down to about 3 or 4 degrees last night and this morning my girls were warm as toast, and the sun's out and its a gorgeous day again. Took the rug off my Appy no probs, but my stroppy chestnut mare just ran off as soon as she knew I wanted to take it off, first sign of a head collar and she's off! So will go out later and try and catch the silly mare! They look forward to coming in their boxes in November, spoilt rotten...nice snug stable rugs and lots of treats! They've only thin rugs on at the moment, which are still looking nice and clean, won't last long though!
Perhaps we need a 'horsey' thread on here? After all, horse muck and growing go hand in hand!

I have4 horses and have rugged 3 of them (the pony is about 26 now), however, almost as soon as I rugged them, the termperatures in Fife rocketed and we'd had a bit of an indian summer going on. I then couldnt decide whether to un-rug or not! Anyway, when i got up this morning it was freezing again, so i'm glad i didnt unrug them after all.

i think a couple of my guys would like to come in but i'm the same and leave them out as late as possible (can you tell i hate mucking out??). i convince myself that being out is better for them!!

PS - totally agree about a horse thread BTW

Rug? What's that, then? I have exmoors, my dear. No need for rugs. Well, ok, Chloe has her fly rug, but not really the same, is it??

My 26 year old ex SJ mare has a rug on at night but it's been on during the day for the last couple as it's been a bit nippy in the wind. Started her night rugging about a month back. Pony and Lenny are going woolly and my other homebred on loan showjumping is probably snuggled up in about 4 rambos by now

I've a friend who competes, and at the first sign of a winter coat out come the clippers, then she spends the next six months trying to keep weight on them with 3 or 4 rugs and hundreds of quid on feed - they make ya laff!

My other half keeps moaning that I am nicking her half of the duvet.

our new forest and welsh mountain are not rugged yet, getting very wooly but glossy and happy. The new forest will get a trace clip soon then rugged as she sweats up when worked and takes ages to dry, which seems unfair. The welshie can rough it. i would much rather they lived out, i hope the weather stays dry as long as possible.
