  • Cheap channel ferries

With the demise of Speedferries in November last year, LD Lines has taken over their route (and database) and offer good value tickets.

A return ticket (13th June-29th June) is priced at just £60 on the website today.

Just a thought for those of us bailing over to the continent this year.

When I looked at their website a couple weeks ago, I noticed that they are a lot slower than Speedferries used to be. The Dover/Boulogne route takes 1 hour 45 mins. (I think Speedferries used to be about 50 mins for the same route). May not be a big problem for most but we have over a 7 hour drive once we get to France so that extra 55 mins is a pain.

Thanks for that PW. I expect we will have to go to UK sometime this year so we might brave the weather and use LD lines.

There comes a point in your life when you realize who matters, who never did, who won't anymore and who always will. Don't worry about people from your past, there's a reason why they didn't make it in your future.

Aye, the speed ferries boat was a trimaran and hence very fast. LD is a conventional boat so is slow.

We will use LD for going to Britanny as its 30 Km nearer than the tunnel and much cheaper but have booked the tunnel for our trip to the Aude as its a 10 hour drive tother side of the pond.

I'll bring a big bag for you to keep, you supply the cups and hot water.

This could just combine with a subsequent posting I am about to make.
Can anyone tell me what is the most westerly French port they go to? My connection is so slow, and my internet skills are so rubbish that its going to be quicker to ask on here.
PW if you're in Bretagne and I am home you and the Piglet family would be most welcome to pop in. Not sure about the quality of tea as I dont drink the stuff, but there will be cold ones in the fridge.
I could also take you to the finest garden centre in the world.

I've just had a "Web Promotion" from P&O, day trip to France (Dover to Calais) for £19, includes 6 FREE bottles of Kumala Intulo wine and 2 for 1 on meals on board. Has to be booked by 12th February for travel before 31st March. There's a £10 supplement for travel on Saturdays.
If my finances were a bit better and I'd got my passport renewed I'd go, I used to love the "boozy cruises". If anyone's interested in more detail, PM me your email address and I'll forward the details on to you

BTW, the price is for a car and up to 5 passengers (I think)

St Malo? It's just above you.
When I went from Portsmouth many years ago we picked St Malo - although a longer sea crossing than le Havre, it cut out a lot of driving for us.

                          Two Sheds,
Is that LD lines that go to St Malo? That would be a real bonus, its just over an hour away.
Sadly that link will take about 2 days to open out here, but I will refer once I get home.

We use Brittany Ferries, partly because we also go to Spain, and their run to Santander is a good one, partly because we joined the 'travel club' when we bought the place in Spain, and the discounts were pretty good then, but also because the only OTHER run to Spain at the time was P&O, and we had had previous bad experiences with them.

They aren't cheap these days! The restaurant on board is a bit special....

We went St Malo this Christmas, for the first time. Quite a pleasant run, and the dogs being in a kennel where we could visit any time we liked was a bonus. The driving from there was easier going than our usual route from Caen, but a bit boring (ALL motorway!). We stop overnight at Toulouse for that run. Only 7 hours driving the second day.....
