  • Cash or Card

When you shop do you use cash or card. I ask because I have noticed more and more people are paying large amounts with cash for their weekly food shop. Most people last night paid cash, not long ago it was mostly card.

I tend to use cash for my supermarket and local shopping now. I think the only time I use my debit card now is at the petrol station and the cashpoint. It's easier to check whether you can afford what you're buying rather than have a panic attack when you see the bank statement.

We tend to use cash, unless it's for a large item. Many years ago, when the kids were young, I got a Christmas job in a shop, a card transaction took three times longer than a cash one and I used to dread them. I could go from keeping up to having a huge queue just because two or three people used their cards one after the other. The shop I worked in didn't have a minimum card spend either and I've known people put less than 50p on their cards, the least I ever took on a card spend was 9p.
One day an old lady was waiting behind someone paying by card, it was back when you had to wait for the receipt thing to come through, then sign it and, presumably because it was Christmas, the system was even slower than usual. "Don't worry", the old lady said, "I've got cash so I'll be quicker for you". "It is almost the 21st century." snapped the card wielder. "Mmm" said old dear, doubtfully, "You'd think things would speed up then, wouldn't you."
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Everything goes on the cards I use 2. 1 gives 1% cashback at the end of the month the other adds up the spends and gives you 1% of your total spend back in Jan. I pay them off in full every month. Plus I use every voucher and reward card I can find.

One lad came in a while ago and paid in cash and before I could stop him he put 5p on his card as he didnt have enough. Lots of teens cant be bothered to pick up their very small change when they use the self serve tills and leave it, I put it to one side and at the end of the night I put it in a charity box, but sometimes if they are only a few pence short I give them the odd change to use.

I pick up about 30p a day on the streets. Children throw away anything less than 10 these days....I bung it in our BAM box.

                  Then use it on holiday.

Same story, but I use a supermarket's own credit card which gives me loyalty points as I normally shop in the same place. Whole thing's paid off at the end of the month.

I found it pretty addictive when I first got it.

Cashback card until we reach the max allowed, then usually my own bank account card; I try to have as little cash on me as possible as I only go and spend it.

Whereas having to pay by card makes me think twice.

Liking the BAM Box idea. I used to save all the pennies and 2ps in the house and use them at college as it had a drinks machine that still took them; most others won't go lower than 5p. I would queue up at the end though or my chums would just laugh at coffee time....until they didn't have enough for a coffee that is. [This is only until last month, as we've only just finished the A Level photo].

                          Cash - it's safer!

I do use a debit card for bigger stuff, but only at places I trust, or use regularly, like the Vet, and that's because I'm too lazy to get around to paying my credit card bill each month, so tend not to use it. It's safer to use that than the debit card though, as it's their money you're spending, so if there's a problem, cloning etc, it gets sorted sooner!

I know, I've been cloned twice GRRRRR!

Card for pretty much everything. Its a deferred debit card which I use from my bank account every month and pay off in full.
The French accept card payments for everything, including a coffee or beer in my local bar.
I dont know if any of the other Froglet/tes know different, but a credit card as we know in the UK doesnt seem to exist in France???
I rarely have cash on me, as it falls through my pockets like I dont know what.
