A cat c is a car damaged but where the repair cost is beyond its market value. You will need a VIC or vehicle identity check which costs about £45. This takes 20 mins and is just a check to ensure a ringer has not been put in the place of a damaged car. Many cat C cars are bought as salvage and put back on the road by individuals who can do the work much cheaper than a garage.

There are only about 40 or so VOSA depots in the UK so you may need to travel a bit to get your VIC.

Sometimes they actually travel out to you to do a VIC, so if you're lucky, you won't have to go anywhere!
