  • You just have to laugh!!!!

Our released rescued hedgehog has been wandering around for the past week or so, so we started to feed her small amounts just to help her along a bit, especially as she may now be pregnant.

So- she didn't eat the food we left for her for a couple of nights and we were getting a bit concerned.

Yesterday my OH was cleaning out the hens and called me over.

....tucked into the corner of the henhouse, under a pile of shavings, was our hedgehog

Yup- we were a few eggs down, so she may have tucked into them...or eaten the hen food...but what was incredible was that the hen house is inside and electric mesh fenced off area which is only slightly open when we nip in to let the chooks out in the morning, lock them away at night and to check on eggs laid during the day.

Looks like she nipped in whilst we were preoccupied with the chooks!

If your electric mesh is like mine, you'll find that it's only the horizontal strings that are electrified, but usually not the bottom string. Most birds can walk through it, perch on it, with no shock, as they aren't earthed. Any animal small enough to step over the bottom string, without touching the one above, will easily pass through with no shock.

          The mesh at the base is only 5cm x 5cm ( it's espesh small to keep banties in)...higher up it's 10cm x10cm.
I doubt she could have squeezed through that without touching the 2nd horizontal ????.

          mind you....

She's back in the barn now bins, nestling down in the nest where we found her and her brother.....I think she just followed the OH into the enclosure. They can't half shift when they want to can't they???

I wonder if she was expecting some yummy banana/cat food from him..she always was the piggo of the two of them!!

Will suggest OH makes a few fox proof boxes for her and her offspring cos leaving the barn door open all the time isn't eventually going to be an option!

hmmm..that and a special woodpile...he's going to love all your extracurricular activities you keep thinking up for him!!!o
