  • What's my caterpillar?

Just got back from South Devon. We saw this huge caterpillar (about 3" long) on the coastal footpath - just missed treading on it and the dog cr@p!!! Anyone know what it is?

It's a beauty ! I have never met one, but it might be on this site. If you click on a plate, you get an enlarged picture. http://www.whatsthiscaterpillar.co.uk/plates.htm

I think its part of the tiger moth family.

i will have a look at my book later on.

wouldnt it be great if that picture was life size, you could have made a fortune.

Could be a Garden Tiger Moth (arctia caja)

Definitely Garden Tiger Moth - we used to have lots in the garden years ago. Careful if you pick it up - the hairs will make you itch for days
