  • Ground Ivy - wanted!!

Hi Guys, I've been reading old copies of GYO and was reading an article by a man named Adrian Thomas about wildlife gardening.
He had recommended all sorts of plants for beneficial insects. One of them that was good for bees was ground Ivy.
Well, after goggling it, it has it's lovers and it's haters!
I have a great, long, thin patch of pebbles between us and next door with a few mini conifers in it and nothing else. It just gets full of tatty weeds and bits of grass in between the pebbles (- they were laid by previous tenants and don't have any weed suppressant underneath them.) - nothing good just messy looking annoying stuff and bits of stupid grass. So I was looking for low ground cover stuff to go in between the conifers and on top of the pebbles. I don't want to dig them all up and put weed membrane under it'll take forever, so I thought this was the next best thing.
I can't get ground ivy anywhere! I've been on to the little guys before looking at the bigger companies. Does anybody know of any seed suppliers that I might not have thought of that may have some in stock? I'm on a bit of a mission now!
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

You should be able to find this easily on a piece of calcareous wasteland or by hedges. Although you aren't supposed to take any plant from the wild, this is so common and will spread so easily that you shouldn't create any problems by taking a single rooted piece to start your own stock. I would imagine you can grow it from seed quite easily though that would take a longer time to establish plants

I don't suppose it's the right time of year to start looking, but I will in the Spring - thanks Bertie. Weird how 'weeds' are sooooooooo in fashion at the moment, one company has run out of dandelions to sell to people willing to grow them for food! I have loads, I could make a fortune! Hmmmm......

            How strange??
I like Pennard Plants, Real seeds & Chiltern Seeds (their seed catalogue is my bible for Latin plant names and fun to read too). I don't think any of these bother with pretty pictures in their catalogues - unlike some other companies I can think of that are all colour and gloss
