  • What potato

When having a baked potato yesterday I thought that it was a nice potato if a bit dry I know that restaurants etc. might have special ovens for baking them and my OH par boils potatoes before baking in an oven, but what variety of potato do you think is the best for baking and how do you cook them?
Though I must admit I have never tasted any as good as the ones we got from a farmers field and put in an open camp fire when I was a boy

Things generally tasted better when we are young because our taste buds deteriorate with age - on the plus side we oldies can enjoy strong cheese like Stilton and more highly spiced foods :-)

Nice to know that you still enjoy your food, rary. Many people of your age lose their sense of taste, appetite and teeth.

I cook big spuds in the microwave for 8-10 minutes - then bung them in an oven (if its on) to crisp the skin.

Best jacket spuds I ever ate were cooked under the chicken rotisserie in a takeaway shop in Sydney, Australia. I used to work shifts in a bank sorting office and usually finished about midday, starving hungry. On my way home, I'd pass this shop and pick up a piping hot spud, with loads of salt on, to eat as I walked!!

That's how I cook my jacket potatoes and will be using that method for tonight's dinner.

I like to spike them with a fork, rub some butter and salt into the skin, wrap it n tinfoil and then put the in the BBQ ashes. Or a bonfire

Best ones I ever had were from a little shop by the school gates when I was a teenager. They were sixpence in old money (2½p in new money) including a big blob of butter. We used to rush out and get them in Winter and warm our hands on them before eating them and getting the bus home (an hour's journey). I think jackets always taste better outdoors.

No one has named a variety yet, do you think there is a best variety for baked potatoes, or is it how they are cooked that is 8mportant

SWMBO does most of the cooking, but I do put the tatties in when she's out so they are cooked when she gets home. I am supposed to do the micro wave thing first, but don't. I rub the mud off with my hand, usually plenty still attached, stab with a fork and cook slowly at about 150 ish for at least 2 hours, never had any complaints yet...…….oh and no food poisoning either.

Pentland Javelins grow big here, if left to harvest later, and these make cracking jackets. I do the microwave and finish in the small top oven, if the big oven isn't on

Thats all right VC, anyway I do have my own teeth, they cost me a fortune, that's why I put them in the display cabinet every night

And of course there was no offence taken, as I never thought any was intended

That last sentence was possibly a mistake, I could have milked it a bit
