I used to have a job answering the phones at a small zoo- around this time of year, it was a regular phone call (I'm not kidding, I had this conversation almost word for word several times, so did several other people there):
Caller: I've found a snake in the garden; it's about 6" long (side note: yes, I know they're never that big- but they were always 'about 6 inches' for some reason)
Me: How many legs does it have?
Caller: Uhhh, I dunno, quite a few?
Me: It's probably an elephant hawk moth caterpillar. It's totally harmless, and quite rare.
Caller: Oh right! I thought it was odd, finding a snake with legs...
They're awsome things- I've never found one, I'm jealous! Probably out looking for somewhere to pupate given how big he is.Comment

They're lovely, I've found a couple in previous years, a bit scarey when you first come across a huge one, but fascinating and not at all dangerous.Comment
