  • Tomatoes shaped like Black Icicle!

    Black Icicle in August

Can you suggest other tomatoes that are shaped like Black Icicle - long and pointy rather than round?

I find the shape so versatile. Cut it in rings or vertically into long slices. Its a long cropper too as there are still plenty in the GH.

I'd like to grow some more toms that are this shape - with good flavour, of course

    EDIT:-
    Suggestions received!
    Black Icicle
    Striped/Speckled Roman,
    Banana legs
    Buffalo horn
Cornue des Andes/Andean Horn - red & yellow
    Opalka
    Orange banana
    Cream Sausage /?Cream Torpedo
    Jersey Devil
    Cornabel
    Purple Ukraine/Purple Russian
    Fiaschetto di Torre Guaceto
    Pertsevidnyy (Pepper - I think!)
    Pertsevidnyy Rosvyy (Pink pepper)

    Grushovka
    Sosulka Oranzheraya (orange icicle)
    Pink Icicle
    Yellow Icicle

EDIT - I have RED seeds and will be growing some in 2017

            Thank you Thelma

I'll see what other varieties are suggested first and maybe order a few to trial next year.

Buffalo Horn is in the Tom Seed circle and I have Striped Roman.

Jersey Devil looks like another banana shaped tom. Anyone tried this one?

Orange banana, striped Roman. Also speckled Roman & cream sausage are in the Tom circle from Nellie.

I tried Jersey devil and didn't have a big crop but it's worth a try. I think Nellies Speckled Roman is very similar to the black icicle in that it has droopy, wispy foliage.

Are Striped/Speckled Roman the same tomato?
                  They look identical in photos

I grew Cornabel this year. Tasty, firm flesh. Will grow again next year. Looks in the same family as the Andes.

In regards to VSP/circle I think both will be from Nellie-M and she suspects they are the same but she got them from different sources.

Amishland Heirloom tomatoes list them as "STRIPED or SPECKLED ROMAN TOMATO.......... This great variety was developed by John Swenson from a stabilized cross of Antique Roman and Banana Legs. He called it Speckled Roman"

                          So now you know lol

Tatiana is always my place to go in such cases:

                            Striped Roman - Tatiana's TOMATOBase

It's not really shaped like the black icicle, though, and its foliage is MUCH more wispy! It looks definitely pathetic. Black Icicle is a strong healthy plant here (and I got the seeds from Scarlet!). Rather a salad tom with plenty of seeds where Speckled Roman is mostly flesh and few seeds for a tom that size.

Some good suggestions have already been named, another one that springs to mind that I think hasn't been mentioned is Purple Ukraine (realseeds).

Fiaschetto di Torre Guaceto has a similar shape, btw, but is only maybe half the size. One of Sarico's varieties I got from the VSP...
