  • Tomato Query

This is my first year as a gardener, and I have had moderate sucess so far, but I get conflicting info about sweet millions tomatoes, some say to nip the side shoots out, others say not to as it is a bush type. Who is right?
    Thanks in advance

I've brought your question into a thread of its own so that you can get a response, rather than having it tagged onto someone else's

Welcome to the Vine by the way

Welcome to the vine Davy, after doing some searching, all the companies say to remove the sideshoots. I am sure Tomatoking will confirm either way so just hold fire for a while.

Well I just happened to be uploading some pictures of BM's water system onto my blog so just happened to be around.

Well like BM I did a search using a link on my blog, where you can search about 12,000 varieties of tomatoes, and its did say they were indeterminate, so best to remove all the shoots.

As for Capsicum, I usually grow 4 shoots off each plant, and stop them at about waist height.

This is rubbish. I envisage you as some kind of Superman character. Whenever someone cries for help, you hear it and run to a phone box, affix your crown firmly to your head with clips or super-glue, then change into your lycra and fly to the thread to help!

Well, that's how it appears to work from where I'm standing! We all appreciate your help!

Waist height?! I'm lucky if my capsicums (sweet peppers, I'm no good with hot food) get halfway between my ankles and knees! Are you some kind of Gary Coleman/Tom Cruise lookalike? I generally consider myself to be good with capsicums as even though I grow outside, I get a few to fully ripen.

                      What varieties do you grow?

                        Hi Maypril
Sorry for the delay in replying, but even 'Supertom' has to sleep.

Here are a couple of pictures of last year's peppers. Definitely taller than Gary or Tom, although Mrs TK calls me short arse!
I am not sure what variety they were as I ditched the packet.

They look good. I grow outdoors so that probably makes a difference. I'm thinking of taking it more seriously next year and making some kind of plastic growframe cover to provide a better environment for them. I use peppers so much in cooking that I really want to grow more myself.

I tried starting earlier this year by setting them off under growlights indoors, but they seem to have flowered earlier but not grown any taller since the flowers started. Do you have any tips for growing big fruit laden pepper plants?

Also, are those Aubergines in the foreground?

                            Hi Maypril

Yes those are Aubergines in the foreground. it was the first time I had grown them. I let them get to waist height, then nipped the heads off the shoots, and had a good crop.
As for the peppers I treat them the same feeding wise as my tomatoes. I strung up 4 shoots, and stopped these also at just over waist height.
