tips on peas please

Sow them last month I think you can still start them now, especially if they are dwarf ones.

Other than that, they're really easy, just picking at the right time is crucial.

I sowed a row at the weekend and sowed some later than this last year and both times they were tall types which fruited well in August. I like to spread my season so I get a sensible number over a longer season, this is only a problem if you live in an area blighted by pea moth - thankfully we don't seem to get it - rushes to touch wood!

Early season I sow in guttering in the cold greenhouse and then plant out when they are a few inches tall but at this time of year I direct sow. I tend to sow in 4' rows, putting a tall cane (I only really grow tall peas), probably 8' long at both ends of the row and often one in the middle too. Then put that large plastic mesh stuff over the canes to form a vertical support. Dig a shallow trench along one side of the mesh and water. When the water has flowed away I plant a pea seed about every inch or two. You can sow double rows at further spacing but I'm quite lazy and this seems to work for me. Fill the shallow trench back in and wait for pea shoots which don't take long at this time of year. The tendrills will hang onto the mesh although you sometimes have to resort to additional string support
