Summer PSB

  • Summer PSB

    I know summer PSB is a fairly new thing, but would be interested in anyone elses experience with it. I sowed mine and it is now about 8inch tall but the purple sprout bit has started to form. Not at all like ordinary PSB which is 2ft plus before it sprouts.

    Mine is looking OK, still growing into large(ish) plants. However, daughter reports that hers is forming heads. Never grown it before, but I would guess cut the heads/florets as soon as they are useable and see if you get sideshoots forming.

      Trouble is that because the plants are only 8in tall the heads that are forming are very small. I will just leave them for now and see what develops.

        They are a different strain and won't produce the quantity of their bigger cousins - but 8 inches does sound more like the size of a calabrese plant.

        Which particular variety are you growing?

        They're usually a result of a cross between a broccoli and some kind of chinese brassica - and we know how quick some of them can be!

          Problem with leaving them is that they will just open into flowers and be inedible. I would do as rustylady suggests and enjoy what is there and wait for side shoots to form later.

            Nipped the tops out of the ones that were flowering and ate them raw straight from the plant, very tasty they were to. Will now just wait to see if side shoots form.
