  • Successes and failures

The first failure might be my spelling of the title,however..............
Garlic was a winner(I did think they were a tad small, but same size as in shops)
Peas were ok,poor germination possibly because the seeds are about 3 years old(memo to self, stop being so tight, buy some new ones)
Carrots were my best for years,no maggots,a few are forked, but good size and most importantly tasty.
Beans, only grew dwarf french and not yet harvested.
Tatties are , well a bit dissapointing, good crop, but tasteless.Moulin Rouge were not too bad,Harlequin were poor,Anya a bit better and the Pink Fir Apples are still in the ground.
Onions were really poor on size, though again the ones in the shops aren't much bigger, tasty though, raw with sliced fresh picked tomato and freshly ground black pepper on homemade bread.
Tomatoes are still going strong, cherry ones very sweet, golden are a change, never grown before(don't know the variety received from a neighbour under our bartering scheme).
Salads have all done well, though the "golf ball" sized radish were not anything like the golf ball size I've seen before, tasty though.
Grew no Brassica's as I'm not able to control the cabbage white butterflies predation whilst I'm still working full time, plan to try again with fleece next year.
Rhubarb started off really badly after being moved in the winter, went to seed and I had no early crop at all.Now it's going like trifids, loads of the stuff.
That's about it this year, still not got my polytunnel, but hope to get it up and running for next year.
    How have/are you doing?
Forgot about my Watercress, now that was tasty and now I know a bit about how it grows that's a definate for next year.

Potatoes were great, harmony planted in the ground, loads of em and tasty. Dont rate the growbags though, did jersey royals in those, not a huge crop.

Broad beans made yummy humous, must plant more next year. French beans were tasty too. Still got FAR too many runners

Sweetcorn all delicious and two cobs per plant.

Armish paste toms in GH are huge and tasty, garden pearl outside were tasteless and succumbed to grey mould

Way too much spinach! Chard bolted but tasty,

Parsnips looking really good, planted the beetroot too late. Carrots all eaten as baby carrots, must develop patience! Garlic was great but again must have patience and leave in the tubs longer.

I learnt that onions in window boxes dont work but in the ground they do!

Peas were plentiful, but a faf to pod. Mange tout and courgettes fried in butter are scrummy! Shed loads of Rhubarb.

Had great success with neeted cabbage but lost first lot of unnetted kale to cabbage white. Had loads of salad.

Spring onions were great but might not need to sow quite so many next year.

Flipping heck I have just realised what a productive season I have had. Many many thanks to all the helpful peeps on here!

oh forgot the strawbs, had a fair few early summer

I would think that everyone who grows veg has good crop and almost total failures. Most of the lottie stuff has done well, the potatoes were poor in yield and quality although as usual the charlotte did very well. Will only grow charlotte next year. Autumn onions did well and had some reasonable sized ones, the spring planted ones were a total disaster and will need to try and analyse why. Good crops of beetroot, cabbage, kale, broccoli, carrots, broad beans, French and runner beans, spinach, chard, garlic, lettuce, courgettes, squash, and others that have slipped my mind. Fruit did extremely well with good crops of strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, blueberries and apples. Cranberries, chokeberry, gojiberry, loganberry, tayberry and blackberry are all young so only a few or no berries from these. Have just purchased some misted tip strawberries to extend the season next year. Have plenty of winter cabbage, leeks, parsnips and sprouts for the winter. Could go on and on.

        Well Done!

I've had a reasonable crop of Charlotte potatoes, some rather good rainbow carrots, a bumper crop of courgettes (yellow & green) and some very large runner beans! Limited success with cabbages & caulis, blinkin' cabbage whites. Had some success with peas but I ate most of them while pottering round the garden!

I've not had any leeks as they're not ready and I'm waiting for Xmas for my first lot of sprouts. This might be my first year for a pumpkin and my sweetcorn is coming on well, neither of these came to much last year so I'm chuffed!

Unfortunately I lost my parsnips to something that tunnels, so none of those for Xmas

        Regards
