Ooh, looking forward to the replies on this one! I have been wondering about growing those black beans you see in Tesco (think they are turtle beans) - Madmax loves black beans and rice. I just need recipes and then I might give it a go now.

No idea, I'm afraid - I've just done the same with shop bought dried haricots. I intend to dry these if they come to anything.

Well, grow them anyway. Try a green one (pod and all) and if it's nice, there's your answer. If it's a bit tough or stringy, then leave them all to dry. This is where I get my bean seeds, she says they are best for drying, but give them a go (Barlotti are meant for drying, but I like them 'fresh': Beans and Herbs

Thanks for that Two_Sheds. Madmax has a friend with a Brazilian wife - I am hoping to eventually get a recipe for black beans with rice from her and I will post it here when I do.

I used to do a dish with black beans and rice when the kids were young - they both loved it. It was called Moors and Christians! Basically a black bean stew with onions, peppers, tomatoes, chilli, then served with white rice and a fried egg on top.

Good oh Birdie. Can't remember where I got it from - it's so long ago that I do it out of me head now! I rarely use recipes as such, just get the idea and run with it. Ready, Steady Flum kind of thing!
