  • Seed sowing thread 2018

Prompted by the heap of seeds included in the mag this month, they must have been reading my mind/posts. I grow primo every year, I had Mooli on the list to grow as something I'd not grown before and the others will be sown for sure.

I was prompted by the same free seeds to sort through all my seeds today...and make use of some sweet tins. I even made a list of unopened packets, opened packets and seeds to buy.

I too was having a look through what seeds i had and what i needed.

I ended up buying 10 different tomato varieties from premier seeds .... just to try something different. Only £8 so not a huge extravagance.

The heated propagator is out and turned on
Although it's only a basic one and doesn't get that warm, so I'm never totally convinced it's working

Inspired by a comment on another thread, I've sown some calendula pot marigolds.
They seem to flower pretty much all year round in the garden, adding some welcome colour and life, so they're definitely hardy. The experiment is to see whether I can get them to germinate early, then transfer them to greenhouse before planting out in spring.

They've come from self saved seeds from the garden, over three different years. I'll be interested to see whether germination rates are much different for the older/newer seeds.

I know they self seed anyway, but they're a great companion and wildlife friendly plant, so I grow a few extra each year and add a few around bare patches in the garden.

Yesterday I sowed some leeks - Lyon Prizetaker - in the greenhouse. A roll of the dice as it is a bit early, but I have a squillion seeds so I won't worry too much if they come to nothing. Might prove to be a triumph of hope over experience...

Nothing yet, although looked at last year's garden diary and I'd already sowed chilies this time last year. Mind you, I still haven't got my garlic in. ......
            Another happy Nutter...

Some red and yellow peppers sown in the simple propagator last weekend - a couple have now popped up and are showing near immediate signs of legginess. Have had to fire up the grow lights before having 'the conversation' with Mrs Balders... its a busted flush in numerous ways I'm thinking... oh well

Just sowed some Leeks (Musselburgh) and Cauliflower (All Year Round). Both old packs, but still in date.
Put them in the heated propagator, which hasn’t been use for a couple of years.

Checked on my sweet pea seeds which I sowed last week and 14 have germinated so far.
Very happy with that, hopefully lots more to follow.

I planted baby plum tomato seeds that I saved from my own tomatoes last year a week or so ago and this photo was taken about 4 days ago. The shoots are much higher now so I'll transplant them shortly.

The propagator never seems to get warm but according to the instructions it'll heat up as and when it thinks it needs to. I got plenty of plants growing okay in it last year so it must be alright.

If the wind dies down enough to get into the greenhouse to collect the pots n trays - I'll be sowing sweetpeas, and a few tomato seeds.

I'm still shall or shan't I about my onions!

I sowed some leeks - a tray of 'Zermatt' and a tray of 'Pancho' in the heated prop.
