Now I feel like I'm a child again

It used to be all about looking at sweets and not able to make up my mind. Now it's totties.
How long before the shop closes?

If I was younger, would agree that it was the wrong way round, but her indoors is from across the water, and there is always a big party to go to, so why argue ( 'cause I never win anyway!)

For buying small quantities of seed potatoes I can highly recommend a visit to one of the Potato Week-ends organisied by HHDRA (now Garden Organics).
Over 120 varieties of seed potato @ 12p per tuber.
Also, peas, beans onion and shallot sets. fertilizers etc. Seed swop.
Speakers, demonstations etc. Lots going on all day.

i have just got an allotment in october last year ,can you tell me when is the write time to plant potatoes and start seedlings i have a greenhouse and airing cuboard ( dont tell the wife about the airing cuboard)

As I am growing potatoes for the first time this year I have read so much about potatoes and a lot of the advice changes from person to person.
I can tell you that some people say plant four weeks before your last possible frost, others say March to April.
I'm going for four weeks before my last possible frost which I estimate as being April 15th. [That�s after using my crystal ball of course.

I have put my seed potatoes into dry frost free but dark area of my cold greenhouse today. I will uncover them in about two weeks, to continue the chitting process.

You need to keep your seed potatoes somewhere light, frost free and cool. I always plant my seed potatoes around about 21st April but this year it was later because of the frosts. The first year I grew potatoes I was really eager and planted them in March like everyone else on the allotments and they where hit with the frost. So now I plant them when I think the frosts are past not when everyone else plants theirs.

New Boy - More tattie questions.

Hi

Completely new to all this but my name was put on the waiting list for a plot for my birthday. I now have Plot 57 Old Craigie Road!! PANIC!!

Lots of questions, but I'll start with tatties! We want to grow a range of (preferrably organic) potatoes. Looked at a variety of catalogues but since I grew up and still live in tattie country would prefer to buy locally from local sources - Dundee, Angus, Perthshire. Asking too much?

All and any advice most welcome

Chitting

If you have quite a few tubers of the same potatoe variety, try this:

Only chit half your potatoes, they should crop sooner with generally larger, but fewer potatoes to dig up. The ones you did not allow to chit should produce smaller but a greater number of potatoes and the plants last longer.
