Default Pumpkin seeds sprouting IN the pumpkin !!!

Pretty much says it all really .

OH carved the pumpkins yesterday and the seeds from the one which has been in the hall for the last 2 months, had actually started to germinate, some to the point of having baby leaves, whilst IN the pumpkin .

Never seen this phenomenon before, has anyone else?

Just shows why you should never ever eat pumpkin seeds whole!

I've had apple and lemon pips sprouting while in the fruit.

It's been so wet this 'summer' that some of my French beans (which I grow for seed) have started to germinate inside the pods

Mebbe it was a bit too warm indoors? Although, like Two_Sheds, I've had a few beans germinated in the pod this year when I came to shell them out for seed saving.

Lots of seeds will happily germinate in the dark.

Same thing has happened to me before last year on my 675 lb pumpkin. Basically, it is stored in too warm an environment. My pumpkin was on display at a garden centre for 4 weeks with underfloor heating on all the time. When I opened the pumpkin the seeds had sprouted leaves but with what little nourishment and lack of light they were dying off and going moldy. Practically lost 90% of the seed.

Best to keep the 'kins' nice and cool but frost free.
