  • poor waxpod bean germination

    Hi
I planted 12 Kentucky Wonderwax bean seeds in a propagator two weeks ago, and only 2 have come up (both in same pot). Two others in another pot look to have rotted.

I need to get more on the go - could I soak them for a few hours then germinate on kitchen paper? I've read this technique on this forum and wonder if it will work for beans.

I germinate all my beans on damp kitchen roll in a plastic strawberry container (from the supermarket last year before I got plants) I don't even bother soaking and have had 100% germination this year. Sowing direct last year gave me very few plants.

Thanks... that's what I'll do then! I may have a little more luck yet with the existing ones... I repotted one today and went to empty the other pots and found two other seeds had roots - hopefully they might come up to!

Stop watering them if you are still doing it and let them dry out a bit.

You can start some more seeds on kitchen paper to replace any that don't come up.

I find the damp kitchen paper method very good for dark beans: but white beans for some reason don't like being too wet/damp

I got near 100% germination with my co co blanc beans on paper in a margerine tub - I think the trick is to not get too much moisture on the paper to begin with and then not let the temperature get too high - I've found room temps (68C) good for beans and peas -on kitchen paper in tubs.
