  • No Fuss gardening!

I've finally realised that the things I enjoy growing and eating are also the easiest to grow, don't take too long to be ready - and most of them have big seeds

    Beans and Mangetout,
    Courgettes, Squashes and Cucumbers
    Onions from sets
    Beetroot
Tomatoes and salad leaves in the GH

If I could grow all of these successfully, I'd be happy.

Each year I try some sort of brassica and they're attacked by pests.
Carrots are lovely but I find them difficult to grow to a decent size.
Not fussed about parsnips, turnips, swede and they're quite cheap to buy anyway.
Even potatoes give me grief with slugs.

Now I'm not going to swear that I'll won't try to grow any of these again but, I might not.

Its the same with flowers, my favourites are the throw and sow flowers like calendula, cornflower and poppies - not because they're easy but I really do prefer them to the fancy flowers - so that's what I'm going to grow.

    I'm making 2019 a No-Fuss gardening year, yes, really I am.

If that will make you happy, then I certainly wouldn't argue with that approach

I still like trying to grow a bit of everything I like to eat, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Like this year, peas and potatoes were next to useless, but swede and winter brassicas have been excellent! As long as something works, I'm happy.

I'm cutting down on flowers this year. And no experimenting with any new veggies.

I'm doing quite the opposite - more of everything! With having turned all of my tiny back garden into growing veg and a new allotment, I have oodles of space to add in more variety! I am growing way more beans, and more types of beans than I ever have before, and I want to grow spuds too Not done that for ages.

I'm a bit like Sarriss: having not grown anything to speak of last year, I'm going a bit mad this year.

Can I ask though: what about all the daft ideas you had going? There were three on the what's new page I opened just the other day!

            Go for it Sarriss.

If I worked harder I could probably grow as much veg as I could eat but, I don't want to work harder, especially when the end results are mediocre. So I'm going to fill the garden with easy stuff and give away any surplus. Even I struggled to eat 200+ courgettes last year!

              They're for playing - that's not "work".

I've cut out a lot of veg over the years my favourite things to grow and eat are :-

                Toms
                courgettes/cucs
lots of different lettuce (grown all year round)
                chard
                kale
                peas
                runner beans
                JA's

grow but not many of each
                parsnips
                sprouts
                potatoes
                carrots

I think you are right in going this way, its disappointing if you don't get a decent crop when you try things, so more important grow what you makes you happy gardening is to be enjoyed
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I agree, rary, no point burning myself out at such a young age, as you have done.

Reading some of these posts and threads can make you envious of the area some folks have for gardening, unfortunately I have to restrict myself to veg that gives me a decent return, potatoes will be in tubs most of the veg garden will be growing onions, both sets and from seed some carrot, which will be under enviromesh this year, half a dozen small cabbages, beetroot and in the flower bed I will grow trombo, as that grows up the way and in the greenhouse it will be tomatoes and peppers
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.
