Are they the B&Q ones you mentioned Minty? I'm popping over to ours this afternoon and may well get overexcited and buy some of my own

Hi Seahorse. Hope your christmas was special.
Yep they were from B&Q, although they were in the storeroom at the back of the shop so it might be worthwhile asking them to check. Never been so exited over spuds. I also nipped in to my local Asda and sourced some polystyrene tray inlays from the apple trays, thought these may be easier to chit them in.
Hope you find some. Would be great to know what you chose.

I'm not sure if it's a second childhood or the start of becoming a mad old biddy but I've never been as excited about potatoes either!

Thanks for the info Minty. I can't understand why they have to be kept in the storeroom if no customer can know they're selling them

. Now I know but where I live, they never have anything to grow for avid vegetable gardeners. I was down South East on Boxing day and saw fruit bushes in Woolworth.

I have come home from B&Q with:

Desiree Seed Potatoes
Nicola Seed Potatoes
3 lots of Red Champagne Rhubarb
Asparagus
Ginger
Horseradish
Shallots
Jerusalem Artichokes
Echinacea
Sea Holly
Lupins
Delphiniums
Globe Thistle

and 80 litres of seed compost.

I would have bought more, except the pushchair was creaking alarmingly and I'm told it's slave labour to make under tens carry more than their own body weight

As for manure... I never thought I would be over the moon to pay good money for (literally) a pile of sh*t but that's exactly what I'll be having delivered in the New Year

At least I'm in good company for the slow descent into madness, eh?!

No, don't remove the chits. If you do they won't grow again. Just put them somewhere cool and light to develop sturdy shoots. They'll be fine if they're not too warm.

I'll second that advice!

I've just checked over my saved ones and even though they are in the light and barely above freezing point, I noticed a few of them were just starting to chit!

As long as they are kept cold, but not frozen, and in the light, any chits that do form will be strong ones!

PS Make sure you store them 'Eyes up'!

Ahhh.......but if you manage to get well rotted stuff, you can cut it like peat blocks, has no smell at all and is similar to peat in texture!
