  • Huge asparagus mistake?

Despite thinking I had researched everything about asparagus before planting I've just read that I was supposed to 'earth up' asparagus crowns in a similar way to potatoes. I made a lovely trench with mound in the centre then completely buried them! Have I made a huge mistake or will they grow through the compost and manure?

I don't think you have at all! I made the mistake of planting mine way to shallowly and they have taken ages to catch up - in fact years!
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

Thanks, I do hope you're right! Wait and see I guess.

If you are worried, water directly onto the crown - that should rinse some off.

I buried mine too deep the first year and they all rotted, so best to keep an eye on them.
This time I've put them on a mound of sand and am earthing them up gradually through the summer.

No need to grow asparagus on ridges unless you are on easily waterlogged land. Burying them too deep is a problem though. usually I do about 2" down at a time mulching up aiming for about 6" down by November and then a 3-4" mulch each Winter.

How long have they been in?....How deep dig you put them.

If you want to have ridges you can always earth them up in a couple of years when the plants are stronger.

They've been in approx 4 weeks and they were topped with 8-10 cm of compost. A couple have grown enough to poke through so we're keeping our fingers crossed still.

Oh crumbs - I've done the same thing! I was weeding the bed today wondering when the foliage will emerge and what it will look like so I don't hoe it off by mistake. Am I right in thinking it is feathery? Looks like I will have to scrape some of the soil off too.

They'll take a while to come up...8cm is not excessive .....don't panic!...Sounds like everything will be fine.
