  • Huauzontle

I was looking at some old broccoli raab threads and found a mention of Huauzontle (Aztec broccoli) from Marchogaeth.

What's it like? Has anyone else grown it? The comments about broccoli raab's flavour were discouraging and I won't be investing in a packet of seeds, but I'm intrigued by this one. Had a look on the real seeds site (you have to scroll down the page a way).
Apparently it's a relative of fat hen. So what does it taste like? Anyone know? Will it become a weed like fat hen and spread all over the place?

I grew it last year & will be growing twice the amount this year - we love it! Easy to grow, tastes great. Gave away a few plants & everyone who had it loved it. Like it says on realseeds website it's like a spinach / broccoli taste. Great texture, firm but yielding. As you eat the flower buds before they flower it shouldn't spread unless you let it.

Basically, grow it is what I'm saying

I quite liked the broccoli raab, but it does have a bitter/green taste which I can see some people wouldn't like, & you have to pick it young otherwise it goes tough & inedible.

A good endorsement HH, thanks. How fast does it grow, seed to harvest?

I'll order some to add to my bulging seed tin.

Can't remember exactly (this is why I'm starting a garden diary this year!) I think it took a little while to germinate but then just went for it & lasted until about October when it got tough.

Plenty of seeds in the packet as well.

Sounded a bit evangelical there didn't I it's just so good though

Also, nothing seems to eat it which is always a bonus....

I grew raab once and found it too bitter for my taste. But the huauzontle sounds like it's worth a try.

I grew it 4 years ago, house mate was Mexican and was thrilled it would grow in England. It grew slowly for a while and then shot up, was taller than me once the sun was out more regularly. I didn't like the taste too much but he loved it.

Right then HH, it's gone into the growing plan here. I have seeds somewhere in the tins...
