  • Help! Why aren't my turnips bulbing??

So, five years with this current garden. First year I sowed turnips very successfully with good roots. Every year since - nothing, just long, twisty tapering roots that hang on the surface or very small balls. It's decent soil, emptied the contents of my compost bin on to it a couple of years ago. I always sow turnip seeds directly into the soil at end of March/beg April when it's still cool as I know they like the cooler weather. They're growing but no turnip bulb forming.

I'm just about ready to give up except I know there must be a reason why the roots are not forming properly. I read somewhere about adding bonemeal if soil too high in nitrogen but any other tips?

Is it best to just use the current turnips as greens, then pull them up, add bonemeal and start again with a new sowing?

My father grows them with no problem at all!

    Yours, exasperated in London!

Are the turnips short of water perhaps?

Thanks Penellype for your message. I pulled the turnips up eventually. I don't think they suffered from a lack of water.. I'm going to try a maincrop next year, rather than earlies - that might help. I'm frustrated but not a giver-upper! :-)

        Nutrients

Been doing a bit of digging i.e. researching and phosphorus is the answer to good root development so next year I'll be adding Phosphorus rich fertilizer to my soil.

I did grow some turnips in a different bed and pleased to report they are slowly bulbing. I don't think they'll grow big as I don't think any of my garden is good for phosphorus, but this new border is clearly better than their normal border.
