Very sad today as The frost got most of my potatoes last night. It wasn't just the odd leaf the whole plants are blackened. Can't understand why as they are the only ones on the allotments to be affected. And There are two plants side by side one frosted the other untouched. Also had courgettes out but they are unaffected. Still as they say some you win some you loose.

All the spuds on our site are sad and wilty Ian. They should still produce - though later than we'd hoped. There's much going on underground and more shoots will come.

Couple of my leaves were going blackish and shriveled this morning - in bags, inside a wooden shed! Not sure if you're near me, but it was quite cold last night (put heating on earlier, etc)

It seems to depend on variety. Some are more able to withstand frost than others. Mind you I can't remember such hard frosts so late in the year. Light frosts are common till mid May up here but it was -6 at Shap last night. Not many tender plants can survive that.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
