    Courgettes

    So, having just listened to a story on the radio about how scarce courgettes are at the moment in supermarkets I was wondering which courgettes, if any, you all were planning to grow this year?

    I've got a few packets of courgette seeds left over from last year so looking for a few good recommendations as I have a 4m x 4m patch that I'm currently thinking will be my courgette patch for this next season.

    Are you trying to feed an Army?

    Seriously three decent Courgette plants will give you Courgettes every day, You would probably get 16 plants on a 4m x 4m plot.

        Kind of yes

        Assuming I get a decent crop I'm hoping supply my family along with a number of friends and people I know from work, I know that many plants will leave me with loads of courgettes but they wont go to waste

          I normally grow zephyr F1 which is good & has always done well for me, but this year I'm trying burpees golden & summer crookneck summer squash as I fancy trying to save my own seeds.

            I grow one Partenon plant, cos it doesn't need fertilising to produce fruit, so it's useful for early crops when the others are still thinking about it
            I also grow one plant of Striata d'Italia, it's tasty, very reliable and crops generously - cos it grows ginormous haha

              The yellow variety Goldmine (F1) is self fertile and produces huge numbers of courgettes (I've seen 10 of varying sizes on a plant at the same time). I mainly grow bog standard Green Bush as I like the flavour and the skins don't go hard too quickly.

                I find I have to successional sow plants as the first ones seem to burn out.
                But you do get lots off them.

                  I grow Black Beauty for green courgettes and usually Soleil for yellow ones. This year I'm going to be growing six in total. With any luck, it'll be too many! Last year I had four plants and didn't have enough (for summer veg, I supply two households of friends). I'll be starting off two of each at the start of the season and then, like Jimmy, I start one of each off six weeks or so later to ensure an even supply.

                  Might try Goldmine next year, Penellype. Sounds like a winner.

                    Lungo bianco - ever since I tried it 2 years ago it has become a must grow. Semi trailing plants, reliable, heavy cropping, thin skinned courgettes that are slightly sweeter and drier.
                    Golden Zucchini - a bit temperamental but I like having a yellow OP variety.
                    Green Bush or Black Beauty - bog standard, reliable green courgettes
                    Rond de Nice - its round when it gets too big you can play veggie football

                    I aim for a total of 8 plants (2 of each)
