  • Bordeaux Mix question

    Hi guys

After losing evrything to blight last year I am thinking of using Bordeaux Mix.

I am pretty clued up on it now I have read quite a bit online but there is one question I can't seem to find the answer to.

If I spray once the plant has set fruit does it matter if the Bordeaux Mix touches the fruit. I mean will it just wash off and be safe to eat?

    Don't spray the fruit
It will wash off, whether it's safe to eat or not depends on your definition of safe. Whatever you spray on there will end up in the earth which will end up in the fruits one way or another through take up through the roots.
If you don't want to eat Bordeaux Mixture in whatever concentration it will be, don't spray

If you're fed up of blight, spray and be damned

All I can say is that the French have been using it on vines for generations, as have our Victorian fore fathers. My dad used it in his poultry drinking water to cure some ailments and we never lost a single chicken. Frankly blighted tomatoes are revolting and last year it put me off eating any of them (even the good ones), so provided you wash the fruit before eating I think it is safe enough. The trick is to give the first batch to your neighbours and monitor their health for a week.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
