  • Best variety of garlic/onion

Whats the best variety of garlic and onions and when can they be planted?

I have quite a large allotment that has just been dug over and is ready to pop stuff in for over the winter.

The variety of onions is limited compared to what will be available for spring. In sets you have Radar, Troy, Electric, Red cross and shakespear to name some available. There are others. In seeds Hi-Keeper is a good one. Garlic look on the Isle of Weight web site. I find them a bit expensive and usually wait till the packs are in the garden centres to purchase.

I use a mix of six scoops of compost three scoops of sand/grit and two scoops of perlite, the quantity is unimportant as long as the ratio is the same, if for seeds I use this mix, if I am potting on I add some blood, fish and bone, along with a small quantity of chicken manure pellets
