  • Baby courgette rotting?

This is my first time ever growing courgettes. I got a couple of wee plants from Homebase and planted them out in early May, and got a big yellow flower within several weeks. The flower wilted and there was a small courgette at the base, maybe about 1.5 inches long. However, the flower is now dead and the tiny courgette appears to be rotting. Have I done something wrong here? Am I supposed to remove the flowers once they have wilted?

Any courgette-growing tips will be appreciated. I am growing them in large containers and fertilising with plenty of worm cast!

Your single flower wasn't pollinated but as the plant gets a little bigger, more flowers of both sexes will appear. You haven't done anything wrong, but you need a male and female flower at the same time. It will happen so be patient.

It's happening me too - don't fret, as it heats up properly for summer, the pesky males will come out to play too and then we'll have our courgettes!!

Ooooh. I was so excited as it was my very first courgette. I really thought you only got a courgette after a flower had been pollenated! Oops. Anyway I have lots of flowers and baby courgettes growing already.... I hope for good results this summer. Last year, all my tomatoes got blighted!

If there are no male flowers yet, just pick any small courgettes that form before they get very big. I'm going to do this tonight as I hate to see them wither!

            ello.

when the flowers shrivel on my courgettes I tend to nip them off, I found that if you don't you can get rot on the tip of the fruit. The flowers tend to loosen when they are past best.
Excuse me, could we have an eel? You've got eels down your leg.

I have another 2" baby courgette which is about as thin as a finger. The flower at the end has shrivelled and I have nipped it off. I don't think it has been properly pollenated at all though. Do I just remove the fruit too before it rots? Is it edible at this stage??

Its perfectly edible. I had 4 or so of mine that were no bigger than a little finger the other night, and I'm still here. ;-)
