  • Anyone actually successfully overwintered an aubergine?

Going to try a couple this winter, as I'd like to see if they get off to an earlier start next year... I've still got some in the mini plastic greenhouse, still flowering but they can't last much longer.

Can't seem to find much about it, so I assume my chances of success are pretty slim, but I'm planning to bung a couple of plants onto the windowsill in the back bedroom and let them take their chances. It won't cost me more than a bit of water every week, as they're already in small pots, and I'm already planning to have a few chilli plants in there overwinter so it's not like it'll be much more work.

Any other Grapes tried this, with or without success? All I could find in past threads was someone asking about doing it, but nothing to say whether it worked.

Yes indeed, it can work quite well and it does produce much earlier crops the next year. I placed my pepper in a sunny window and you can see a photo here peppers showing the overwintered pepper side by side with the new seedlings for the summer ahead.

I'm going to try with mine as well, have a couple of healthy plants that didn't produce( flowers just fell off!) but thought that this might give them a head start to the sunshine next year.

I couldn't even grow an aubergine during the summer never mind keep one through the winter!

I started my Viserba aubergines in February and they are only now setting fruit (I gave Alice some of the seeds and she had a cracking harvest). I don't have anywhere inside I can try and overwinter them unfortunately so will just have to see how long they last the unheated GH - poor things.

Yes, I am the same. I have unheated GH and a lack of windowsil space. I do have several healthy aubergine plants that have fruited quite well but could try to overwinter, also peppers and chilli plants.

Didn't know it was possible to overwinter Aubergines, unfortunately I composted mine earlier today.

What a great idea - I have 2 bought aubergine plants in my 'tent' on the lottie so they will be re-potted and coming inside along with a purple chilli as an experiment - I resent spending good money on these and nothing much happening due to cool wet weather after I planted them. Will watch this space with interest!

Excellent - will be interesting to hear how everybody's aubs get on! I was planning to basically just bring a couple indoors, trim off the larger leaves, and then reduce watering to minimum levels over the winter. I.e. much the same as people have reported doing with chilli plants.

Not sure whether it's worth repotting into fresh soil - I might try that with one and see.
